Grüner Veltliner’s dominance emerged mainly during the twentieth century. Postwar adoption of the high-training system associated with Austrian grower Lenz Moser made vineyards easier to mechanize and helped the productive variety expand. High yields could produce simple wine, but lower yields and careful site selection demonstrated its capacity for substantial dry whites. Austria’s 1985 adulteration scandal, which concerned parts of the wine trade rather than Grüner Veltliner alone, brought severe reputational damage. Stricter controls and a subsequent emphasis on origin and quality helped the grape become an international emblem of Austrian wine.
Today Grüner Veltliner is served with foods ranging from vegetables to freshwater fish and pork, although pairing customs are preferences rather than fixed traditions. Its modern identity joins an old Central European vine, industrial-era vineyard change, contemporary cellar technology and legally regulated regional marketing. The name documented in the nineteenth century therefore marks recognition, not creation, of the grape.

Historical context
