Pinotage began not as an old regional wine but as a deliberate grape-breeding experiment. In 1925, Stellenbosch University viticulturist Abraham Izak Perold crossed Pinot Noir with Cinsaut, which South African growers then commonly called Hermitage. His precise objective is not fully documented, although the pairing is generally interpreted as an attempt to combine Pinot Noir’s wine quality with Cinsaut’s vigor and adaptation to local conditions. The name “Pinotage” joined elements of the parents’ South African names.

Modern producers also make rosé, sparkling Pinotage, sweet wine, and blends, including the loosely defined category known as Cape blends.
Pinotage’s cultural importance exceeds its share of global vineyards. It gave South Africa a cultivar created locally and became a recognizable export identity during the twentieth century. That celebration requires context: vineyards and cellars developed within systems of segregation, apartheid, and severe labor inequality whose effects remain visible. Modern Pinotage consequently embodies both technical adaptation and a contested national wine history. As an alcoholic beverage, it also carries the health and social risks associated with alcohol; its significance is cultural and agricultural, not nutritional necessity.
