Historical context
Egypt was ruled by the New Kingdom, a centralized state sustained by Nile agriculture, taxation, temples, and long-distance exchange. Emmer wheat and barley were major cereals, while bread and beer were institutional as well as household staples. Workshops could provision labor forces on a substantial scale. Egypt maintained contacts across the eastern Mediterranean, Nubia, and the Near East, but there is no secure evidence that the specifically named and pocket-form modern aish baladi already existed.
