Today’s chocolate retains the same botanical foundation but reflects major transformations: controlled fermentation, roasting, grinding, pressing, refining, and frequent blending with sugar and milk. The ancient residue therefore marks neither the invention of the modern chocolate bar nor a recoverable named recipe. It documents something more fundamental—the incorporation of cacao into human food practice, probably as a drink, at an early stage in Mesoamerican social and agricultural development.

Historical context
Southern Mesoamerica contained farming villages and emerging ceremonial centers rather than the later Maya cities or Aztec state.
