Historical context
Andean communities were moving from the Initial Period toward the Early Horizon. Chavín de Huántar was emerging as an influential ceremonial center, while coastal and highland settlements exchanged crops, marine goods, obsidian, textiles, and camelid products through routes spanning hundreds of kilometers. The Inca state lay roughly two millennia in the future, and neither modern national borders nor later Quechua names can be projected straightforwardly onto these communities.
