Reconstruction
San Lorenzo, on an elevated landform amid the floodplains of southern Veracruz, was the dominant Olmec center of the Early Preclassic. The strongest evidence for a feast there comes from an elite mortuary deposit rather than a written account. Several hundred ceramic vessels capped a pit containing disarticulated human remains interpreted by the excavators as sacrificial victims. The number and variety of vessels suggest a large gathering held after interment, although the participants, sequence of ceremonies, and exact date cannot be reconstructed securely.
Eleven vessels from this context were tested for theobromine, a chemical marker associated with cacao; four produced positive results. They included a coarse tripod storage jar, a fine kaolin-paste serving jar, a large serving bowl decorated with a supernatural face, and a small drinking cup. This combination supports preparation, storage, serving, and individual consumption of a liquid cacao product. It does not reveal the recipe. The vessels might have held a drink made from cacao seeds, a fermented beverage made partly from cacao-pod pulp, or another cacao preparation. Calling it chocolate in the modern sense would go beyond the evidence.
San Lorenzo’s broader food remains help reconstruct the feast’s setting but not its precise menu. Fish, especially species obtainable from rivers and seasonally flooded environments, turtles, domesticated dogs, and smaller quantities of deer and peccary contributed to local subsistence. Maize, beans, and squash were present, while floodplain foods and horticulture remained important. Chemical research has also identified probable Capsicum residues in San Lorenzo pottery. Any platter combining these foods at this particular ceremony is therefore a reasonable possibility, not a direct archaeological observation.
Ceramic form indicates that liquids could be stored in jars, transferred with ladles or pitchers, presented in large bowls, and consumed from cups. Some serving vessels were finely made or decorated, whereas preparation and storage vessels were generally plainer. Researchers interpret the apparent breaking and deposition of numerous pots as conspicuous destruction: valuable goods and labor were removed from circulation while hosts demonstrated their capacity to mobilize food, drink, craft production, and guests. Cacao’s association with a mortuary rite may also have linked elite authority to ideas about death and renewal, although those meanings remain interpretive.
San Lorenzo declined around 1000 BCE, making the card’s 1000–900 BCE range later than most securely documented cacao use and possibly later than the feast itself. Cacao nevertheless remained a prestigious ceremonial beverage in later Maya and Central Mexican societies. That wider history gives this deposit significance as early evidence for socially charged cacao consumption, but it does not prove an uninterrupted tradition from one San Lorenzo ceremony to modern Mexican chocolate.
Historical context
Around 1000–900 BCE, San Lorenzo was passing from its period of greatest power into sharp demographic and political decline, while La Venta was becoming a leading Gulf Coast center. Recent estimates place peak San Lorenzo at roughly 12,000 inhabitants across a settlement landscape of at least 775 hectares, although population figures remain approximate. Its riverine setting connected farming communities, fisheries, wetlands, and exchange routes carrying materials such as highland obsidian and distant basalt. Far beyond Mesoamerica, the Western Zhou dynasty ruled much of northern China after approximately 1046 BCE, Neo-Assyrian power was expanding in Southwest Asia, and Phoenician maritime networks linked settlements across the Mediterranean.

San Lorenzo’s documented cacao sequence ends around 1000 BCE, and associated radiocarbon ranges for the relevant vessels are broad, often extending from approximately 1500 or 1700 BCE to 900–1100 BCE. The event is attributed to the center’s apogee, chiefly before its decline around 1000 BCE.
