Busaa is a fresh, opaque Kenyan cereal beer made on a household or small commercial scale. It is especially associated with communities in western Kenya but is also brewed and sold in towns, including Nairobi. No securely documented event establishes 1900 as its year of invention. The drink is better understood as a modern form within eastern Africa’s much older tradition of fermenting millet and sorghum, transformed after introduced maize became an increasingly important food crop.

Yeasts produce alcohol and carbon dioxide, while lactic-acid bacteria can contribute acidity. The resulting strength, sweetness, sourness, and microbial quality vary substantially with time, temperature, grain proportions, water, and sanitation. Busaa is therefore consumed soon after brewing; it continues to change and does not travel or keep like filtered, pasteurized industrial lager. It may be poured from a shared container or served by individual measure in homes and drinking places.
The drink has economic as well as dietary importance. Brewing and selling it has often provided household income, including income for women, while drinking places have served as social spaces. At the same time, colonial and postcolonial alcohol controls frequently privileged licensed industrial products and treated African-made beverages as objects of taxation, restriction, or policing. The legal position has varied, and busaa should not be confused with chang’aa, a distilled spirit that carries different production risks. Poorly controlled brewing water can nevertheless make any fresh beer unsafe.
Busaa’s history joins two agricultural timelines: indigenous expertise in malting and fermenting African cereals, and the adoption of maize following the Columbian Exchange. Contemporary busaa still expresses that combination. Commercial beer, urban regulation, changing grain prices, and modern licensing have altered where and how it is sold, but its short shelf life and variable flavor preserve the practical character of a locally brewed cereal ferment.

Historical context
The area was governed as part of the British East Africa Protectorate. Nairobi had only recently emerged around a railway depot established in 1899, while construction of the Uganda Railway was linking the coast with the Lake Victoria region. Maize was expanding within eastern African farming and food systems, but finger millet and sorghum remained important grains. Household fermentation operated alongside growing colonial markets, taxation, wage labor, and official efforts to regulate African alcohol.
