Reconstruction
Cape wine began as part of the Dutch East India Company’s attempt to provision ships at the southern tip of Africa. Jan van Riebeeck, commander of the Cape settlement, had vines planted after the refreshment station was established in 1652. On 2 February 1659, he recorded that wine had been made from Cape grapes for the first time. The surviving written notice makes the date unusually secure, although it tells us much less about the wine’s flavor, grape variety, or exact composition.
The first vintage was probably a small, experimental production rather than the polished bottled drink now associated with the Cape Winelands. Ripe grapes would have been harvested and crushed or pressed, releasing juice that fermented through yeasts naturally present on fruit and equipment. Seventeenth-century producers could manage fermentation and storage in vats or barrels, but they lacked modern temperature control, laboratory analysis, sterile filtration, and standardized cultured yeast. The resulting wine may have been unstable and vulnerable to oxidation or spoilage. Claims about its color, sweetness, or resemblance to a modern cultivar are therefore uncertain unless tied to more specific records.
Wine served the Company’s wider provisioning project. European medical and maritime practice commonly treated wine as a useful shipboard ration and trade commodity, though it did not prevent scurvy; fresh produce supplied vitamin C more effectively. As vineyards spread beyond the original settlement, especially under later governors such as Simon van der Stel, viticulture became embedded in the colonial economy. French Huguenot settlers arriving from the late 1680s are often credited with improving Cape winemaking, but the industry was already established before their arrival.
Expansion carried severe human costs. Colonial farms occupied land used by Khoekhoe pastoral communities, while enslaved people brought from Madagascar, Mozambique, East Africa, South and Southeast Asia performed much of the agricultural and cellar labor. Cape wine consequently expressed both adaptation to a Mediterranean-type climate and an unequal system of landholding and forced labor. Estates such as Constantia later gained international reputations, connecting Cape production to European and Asian markets.
Modern South African wine differs profoundly from the 1659 experiment. Vineyard specialization, glass bottles and reliable closures, microbiology, refrigeration, controlled fermentation, and global distribution have made wine safer and more consistent. The industry also endured vine disease, changing export markets, state regulation, apartheid-era labor exploitation, and political isolation. Contemporary Cape wine remains economically and culturally important, but its history cannot be separated from colonial settlement, slavery, dispossession, and continuing debates over land and working conditions.

Historical context
The Cape settlement was a small Dutch East India Company outpost founded only seven years earlier to resupply vessels traveling between Europe and Asia. Ships followed routes spanning thousands of kilometers around the Cape, while Khoekhoe pastoral communities maintained established regional economies of cattle and sheep. The local Mediterranean-type pattern of wet winters and dry summers favored transplanted grapevines, but the colonial vineyard economy was still experimental. The Mughal Empire dominated much of South Asia, the Qing dynasty ruled China, and Dutch maritime commerce linked the Atlantic and Indian Ocean worlds.
