Historical context
Coastal Suriname was a Dutch plantation colony whose export economy depended heavily on enslaved African labor, while Maroon societies and multiple Indigenous peoples maintained settlements, gardens, exchange routes, and political autonomy across much of the forested interior. Cassava had already been cultivated in tropical South America for millennia.
