Maheu is a tart, usually nonalcoholic cereal drink made in Zimbabwe and elsewhere in southern Africa. It belongs to a wider family whose names include mageu, mahewu, amahewu, and related spellings. Although maize is now its characteristic grain, assigning the drink a single birthplace or an origin in exactly 1900 is not defensible. Maize reached Africa after the Columbian exchange and became increasingly important in southern African farming, while fermented drinks and porridges made from older cereals such as sorghum and millet already existed. Lactic-acid bacteria then acidify the mixture, commonly over roughly one or two days. Malt can also supply enzymes that break starch into fermentable sugars, producing a sweeter and more fluid drink. Exact methods vary substantially, and not every traditional batch uses a deliberately maintained starter.
The resulting beverage is opaque, sour, and more substantial than water or tea. It may be drunk between meals, offered as refreshment, or consumed as a convenient source of cereal energy. Its acidity can slow some spoilage organisms, but household fermentation is not automatic proof of safety: water quality, vessel cleanliness, temperature, and storage time remain important. Maheu generally contains little alcohol when fermentation is dominated by lactic-acid bacteria, although uncontrolled batches can undergo some yeast fermentation. Its nutritional value depends primarily on the concentration and refinement of the maize meal, with fermentation altering flavor and digestibility more reliably than it increases total nutrients.
Industrial production changed maheu during the twentieth century. Manufacturers could standardize cereal solids and acidity, use selected cultures or controlled acidification, pasteurize the finished drink, and package it for shops and urban consumers. Commercial versions may contain sugar, flavorings, stabilizers, preservatives, or added vitamins and minerals. These products last longer and travel farther than a fresh household batch, but they may also contain substantially more free sugar and less textural variation.
Maheu remains significant because it links an African household fermentation practice with the modern beverage industry. It also illustrates a broader historical process: maize, an American domesticate, entered African agriculture and was incorporated into local techniques rather than merely replacing them. Today, homemade and branded maheu coexist, but neither should be treated as a fixed or universally standardized recipe.

Historical context
The territory later called Southern Rhodesia was governed by the British South Africa Company, and most African residents lived through rural farming and pastoral economies under intensifying colonial pressure. The railway reached Bulawayo in 1897 and Salisbury in 1899, accelerating movement of grain, manufactured goods, mine labor, and packaged foods. Maize, introduced to Africa centuries earlier, was already becoming a major southern African staple, although sorghum and millet remained important in many communities. The precise emergence of maize-based maheu cannot be tied securely to this single year.
