Lahpet is tea made into food. Today lahpet remains distinctive because most tea worldwide is infused and discarded, whereas Myanmar’s fermented leaves are swallowed. Historical context
The Pagan Kingdom dominated much of the Irrawaddy valley, supporting monumental Buddhist construction and increasingly influential Theravada institutions. Tea was already an important cultivated and traded plant in parts of China and adjoining uplands, while routes through Yunnan and mainland Southeast Asia moved forest products, metals, ceramics, textiles, and foodstuffs. Evidence does not establish that the modern lahpet salad existed in this period, but regional tea cultivation and preservation make an early form of edible fermented tea plausible.
