Reconstruction
Between 1870 and 1872, Qajar Iran experienced a catastrophic famine produced not by one failure but by several interacting shocks. Rainfall had often been deficient since the early 1860s, and the winter of 1869–1870 brought exceptionally little rain or snow. Dry-farmed grain failed across large areas, while depleted springs, qanats, rivers and groundwater also reduced irrigated harvests. Khorasan, Isfahan, Yazd and Fars were among the regions most severely affected.
Bread grains stood at the center of the crisis. Wheat and other cereals became scarce or unaffordable as harvests contracted and prices rose. Conditions nevertheless varied sharply. Warm districts of southern Iran lost rain-fed crops in 1870, yet date palms produced well, and fruit remained available in some places during the summer of 1871. Coastal districts could obtain imported rice through Persian Gulf trade. These foods offered partial protection, but they could not compensate nationally for failed grain production or distribute themselves to isolated inland communities.
Transport and political economy converted shortage into famine. Iran had no national railway network, and grain generally traveled by caravan animals over slow, difficult routes. Severe snow in the winter of 1871–1872 further interrupted communication. Contemporary observers also accused landlords, merchants, officials and clerics of hoarding or obstructing grain shipments. The telegraph occasionally helped expose such practices: news transmitted ahead of a Shiraz grain caravan reportedly frustrated an attempt to prevent it from entering Isfahan. Scholars agree that market manipulation aggravated the emergency, although they disagree over whether expanding opium and other cash crops had substantially displaced grain before the famine.
As purchasing power collapsed, artisans, laborers, poor pastoralists and displaced villagers became especially vulnerable. Accounts describe people eating weeds and vine leaves, while animals normally kept for transport or other purposes were consumed in Mashhad. Livestock losses deprived pastoral families of food, mobility and wealth; some nomads in Fars consequently became sedentary. Hunger was compounded by cold, diarrhea, dysentery and fever among populations already weakened by malnutrition. Mortality was unquestionably extensive, but national totals remain uncertain because Iran lacked reliable demographic statistics.
Relief was fragmented. Grain was brought to Tehran and sold to bakers at a loss, missionaries distributed bread and dates, and committees in Bushire organized shelters, orphan care and food assistance. Road-building schemes exchanged wages for labor while improving local movement, but their scale remained small relative to the disaster. Recovery began when rainfall improved in 1872, although shortages of seed, cattle and agricultural labor restricted subsequent cultivation.
The famine left abandoned fields and villages, disrupted livestock commerce and accelerated migration. Its enduring food-system lesson is that drought alone does not determine famine: access to grain, transport capacity, market conduct, irrigation maintenance and accountable relief can decide whether a poor harvest becomes mass starvation.
Historical context
Iran was ruled by Naser al-Din Shah of the Qajar dynasty. No reliable national census existed, and central authority over provincial officials, landlords and tribal territories was uneven. The Suez Canal had opened in 1869, strengthening maritime trade through ports such as Bushire, while an expanding telegraph network could transmit information far faster than food. Grain still moved mainly by camel, mule and horse caravan over difficult routes; Iran's first operational railway near Tehran did not open until 1888. This mismatch between rapid communication and slow bulk transport shaped both the famine and the limited relief response.

Written sources
StrongContemporary Persian chronicles, diplomatic correspondence, relief-committee records and travel narratives independently document drought, crop failure, high prices, migration, disease, relief and mortality. Individual observers may exaggerate, but the convergence establishes a major famine.
