St. Lawrence Island Famine

Reconstruction

Between the winter of 1878–1879 and the following year, the St. Lawrence Island Yupik experienced one of the most destructive subsistence crises documented in the nineteenth-century Arctic. At least 1,000 people died, and archaeological-demographic reconstruction proposes a pre-famine population above 2,200 and mortality exceeding 80 percent. Exact totals remain uncertain because visiting observers counted only selected settlements, while some survivors moved elsewhere. Several villages were emptied or abandoned, and the population eventually concentrated principally at Sivuqaq, now Gambell.

The island’s food economy depended heavily on the seasonal availability of walrus and seals, supplemented by whales, fish, birds, eggs, and gathered plants. Walrus provided meat and calorie-rich blubber as well as skins, ivory, and other materials essential to travel and household production. Successful hunts therefore supplied both immediate meals and food placed in caches for winter. By the 1870s, however, Euro-American vessels had turned increasingly from depleted bowhead whales to commercial walrus hunting. This sharply reduced a resource on which northern Bering Sea communities depended, leaving island households more vulnerable when weather disrupted the animals’ movements.

The immediate crisis unfolded through two contrasting but equally damaging winters. In 1878–1879, unusually warm, stormy conditions reportedly prevented dependable shore-fast ice from forming, restricting access to walrus and seals. During 1879–1880, severe north winds, heavy snow, and extensive unbroken ice kept walrus beyond hunters’ reach. At Sivuqaq, survivors reportedly ate their dogs and the walrus-hide coverings of boats and houses after ordinary provisions failed. These were emergency foods, not customary substitutes, and the surviving reports do not provide enough detail to reconstruct their preparation safely.

Contemporary traders and government officers often blamed alcohol sold by visiting ships, claiming that drinking had interfered with the autumn hunt. Later scholarship treats that explanation cautiously. Alcohol may have worsened conditions in some settlements, but the scale and duration of mortality cannot be explained by temporary intoxication alone. Walrus depletion, successive hunting failures, and probable infectious disease acted together. Yupik oral histories add another essential perspective: some narratives interpret the catastrophe through damaged moral relationships between people and the animal beings that sustained them. This is a cultural interpretation of causation, not a zoological or meteorological claim.

The disaster permanently reorganized settlement and subsistence. Survivors gathered at fewer communities, while migration from Chukotka contributed to demographic recovery and cultural continuity. Hunting shifted toward more communal boat-based pursuit of walrus at offshore ice. Federal authorities introduced domestic reindeer to the island in 1901 as an additional food and economic resource, and herding later helped shape Savoonga. Nevertheless, walrus, seal, whale, fish, and birds remain central to St. Lawrence Island food traditions, making the famine an enduring warning about the consequences of commercial depletion and disrupted access to migratory foods.

Historical context

Alaska had been under United States control for only eleven years, following its 1867 purchase from Russia, and remote Bering Sea communities had little access to organized relief. St. Lawrence Island probably supported more than 2,000 people distributed among at least ten substantial communities and numerous seasonal camps. Industrial hunting was transforming the region: commercial vessels took roughly 150,000 Pacific walruses during the peak decades beginning in the late 1860s, with most recorded catches occurring before 1879. Steamships, rifles, global markets for oil and ivory, and shipborne alcohol and disease connected the island to an expanding industrial economy without providing a dependable replacement food supply.

Evidence

Archaeological

StrongSurveys, house-pit counts, abandoned settlements, human remains, and the archaeological identification of Kukulek directly document extensive occupation before the catastrophe and severe subsequent population contraction.

Written sources

StrongReports by traders, whalers, Revenue Steamer Corwin personnel, and later ethnographers document failed hunting, abandoned villages, deaths, and emergency consumption. Their causal judgments, especially concerning alcohol, reflect incomplete observation and contemporary prejudice and require critical comparison.

Food identification

StrongHistorical, ethnographic, and archaeological evidence consistently identifies walrus and seals as major winter foods and records dogs and walrus-hide coverings as emergency foods at Sivuqaq.

Dating

StrongIndependent contemporary and later sources place the principal mortality in winter 1878–1879 and continued food shortage in winter 1879–1880, although some 1881 visitors mistakenly assigned more deaths to the second winter.

Preparation method

LimitedStorage of hunted meat and blubber in household caches is supported, but surviving famine accounts provide little reliable detail about how emergency foods such as dog meat and architectural or boat hides were prepared.

Historical interpretation

ModerateA multicausal explanation involving commercial walrus depletion, two years of disruptive weather, food shortage, and probable infectious disease is well supported. The relative contribution of each factor remains uncertain, and alcohol appears to have been exaggerated in some outsider accounts.

Visual reconstruction

InterpretiveHistorical descriptions support depictions of semisubterranean houses, stored marine foods, sea ice, and abandoned settlements, but any detailed scene of hunting failure, food preparation, or individual deaths would be a reconstruction rather than direct observation.
