Reconstruction
Bluefish Caves, a group of small limestone rockshelters in northern Yukon, preserve an unusually long accumulation of windblown sediment and animal bones. Excavated under Jacques Cinq-Mars between 1977 and 1987, the site became central to debate over whether people lived in eastern Beringia during the Last Glacial Maximum, thousands of years before the Clovis archaeological tradition. A 2017 reanalysis identified fifteen bones with modifications confidently attributed by its authors to human activity and another twenty considered probable. Six modified specimens were directly radiocarbon dated, placing the clearest proposed activity between about 24,000 and 12,000 calibrated years before present, with important examples around 24,000–22,000 years ago.
The strongest food evidence comes from horse and caribou remains. A cut-marked mandible of the extinct Beringian horse, Equus lambei, bears parallel incisions on its inner surface in a position interpreted as evidence for removing the tongue. A caribou pelvis has marks consistent with filleting. Other horse and caribou limb bones bear incisions interpreted as defleshing or tendon removal. Cut marks have also been reported on wapiti and possibly Dall sheep and bison. These observations indicate carcass processing, but they do not reveal complete meals. No cooking method can be assigned to the early episodes: the relevant evidence does not establish whether meat was roasted, boiled, dried, frozen, fermented, or eaten raw.
The deposits were not a sealed dining floor. Carnivores, scavengers, natural deaths, frost, sediment movement, and falling limestone all contributed to the assemblage. Most bones were modified or accumulated without human involvement, and critics have questioned provenience, stratigraphic integrity, and whether some surface marks could have natural causes. Later experiments and taphonomic studies have strengthened the case that selected marks and certain mammoth-bone fractures are unlikely to result from rockfall or carnivore activity, but the broader interpretation remains contested.
Researchers therefore reconstruct Bluefish Caves I and II as intermittently visited hunting or carcass-processing places rather than permanent settlements. Horse appears especially important in the faunal record, although bone abundance alone cannot show what proportion of human food it supplied. If the cut marks are correctly identified, the caves document flexible exploitation of muscle, tongue, tendons, hides, and perhaps bone as raw material in a cold, open Beringian environment.
Their modern significance is not a surviving recipe or demonstrated cultural lineage. It is evidence that northern foragers may have practiced careful, multi-part carcass use deep in the Ice Age. Caribou remains important in many northern food systems today, but direct continuity from the unidentified Bluefish visitors to particular contemporary peoples or food traditions has not been established.
Historical context
The Last Glacial Maximum reached its greatest extent roughly 26,500–19,000 calibrated years ago. Global sea level stood about 120 metres below the modern level, exposing the Beringian landmass between northeast Asia and Alaska. Northern Yukon remained largely unglaciated and supported cold herbaceous tundra and a shifting ecological mosaic inhabited by horse, caribou, bison, mammoth, muskox, saiga, predators, birds, and fish. Humans were already present in western Beringia at Yana in Arctic Siberia by about 32,000 calibrated years ago, but securely interpreted archaeological sites were sparse across the immense region.

Archaeological
ModerateCaves I and II yielded lithic material and a small number of bones interpreted as culturally modified, but the deposits are palimpsests affected by multiple natural and biological agents.

ModerateDetailed microscopic and morphometric analyses identified selected marks as consistent with stone-tool cutting, while most of the large faunal assemblage reflects carnivores, scavengers, natural deaths, and post-depositional processes.
Dating
StrongSeveral proposed cut-marked bones were directly dated by accelerator mass spectrometry. The measurements securely date the bones, although their archaeological significance depends on the disputed identification of the marks as human-made.
Food identification
ModerateHorse and caribou specimens are taxonomically identified and carry marks interpreted as butchery. This supports carcass processing, but direct consumption is inferred rather than observed.
Preparation method
ProbableThe position and orientation of selected marks support tongue removal, filleting, defleshing, skinning, or tendon stripping. No early cooking or preservation method has been demonstrated.
Geographic attribution
StrongThe caves are a documented rockshelter complex near the Bluefish River, approximately 54 kilometres southwest of Old Crow in northern Yukon.
Historical interpretation
LimitedIntermittent use as a hunting or carcass-processing location is a reasonable reconstruction, but site formation, provenience, and the anthropogenic origin of some modifications remain debated.
