Reconstruction
The idea that domestic chickens crossed the Indus world between 2000 and 1200 BCE belongs to an older reconstruction of chicken history. Recent multidisciplinary reassessment supports a later and less certain story. The earliest currently unambiguous domestic chicken remains come from Ban Non Wat in Thailand, approximately 1650–1250 BCE. Genomic research also identifies the red junglefowl subspecies Gallus gallus spadiceus, associated today with southwestern China, northern Thailand, and Myanmar, as the principal ancestral population of domestic chickens.
Once incorporated into human communities, chickens could be carried alive more easily than large livestock. Their westward movement probably followed overlapping migration and exchange routes rather than one organized trade corridor. Cultivation may have helped create this relationship: rice and millet fields, fallows, and settlement margins offered grain and disturbed vegetation attractive to junglefowl. This is a scholarly ecological interpretation, not direct proof of how the first birds were domesticated or transported.
The Indus Valley was long treated as a crucial staging point. Reports described chicken-like bones at Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, an incomplete bird figurine, and a Mesopotamian expression sometimes translated as a bird from Meluhha, the name associated with the Indus region. Reanalysis has substantially weakened these claims. One Harappa specimen is inconsistent with Gallus, another is taxonomically ambiguous, and several Mohenjo-daro bones are questionable, unusually large, or from upper deposits where intrusion is possible. Extensive later excavations at Harappa produced no new Gallus bones. The Mesopotamian term may denote a francolin or junglefowl rather than a domestic chicken.
Better-supported South Asian evidence appears after the Mature Harappan urban period. At Daimabad in western India, Gallus is absent from earlier Savalda and Harappan levels but prominent in Early Jorwe deposits around 1500–1200 BCE. Chickens are also reported from other broadly contemporary peninsular sites. Near the end of the Bronze Age, an apparent Gallus image from a temple precinct in Mesopotamia suggests that transported birds could carry religious or exotic significance. Secure evidence that they immediately supplied ordinary households with substantial quantities of eggs and meat is lacking.
By the Iron Age, chickens became increasingly visible across Southwest Asia, and later reached Ethiopia and Mediterranean Europe. Evidence from Europe indicates that newly introduced chickens were sometimes treated as unusual or symbolically important animals before routine butchery became common. Their transformation into a globally important source of meat and eggs was therefore gradual. Modern poultry farming is a defensible long-term legacy of this dispersal, but it should not be projected unchanged onto the uncertain chicken economies of Bronze Age South Asia.
Historical context
The Mature Indus urban system, which flourished approximately 2600–1900 BCE, connected cities such as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro with farming settlements, coastal communities, and distant resource zones. Indus exchange reached the Arabian Gulf, Mesopotamia, Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asia, while standardized weights supported commerce. Regional farmers combined winter crops such as wheat and barley with varying mixtures of summer crops, pulses, oilseeds, and millets. After about 1900 BCE, large urban centers declined or reorganized into smaller regional traditions. Around 1650–1250 BCE, meanwhile, the earliest presently unambiguous domestic chickens occur at Ban Non Wat in Thailand, placing their secure westward dispersal late in the Bronze Age rather than at its beginning.
