Guitarrero Cave Andean Plant Users

Guitarrero Cave overlooks the Santa River in Peru’s Callejón de Huaylas, about 2,580 meters above sea level. Its dry interior preserved materials that normally vanish from archaeological sites: plant fragments, cordage, woven fiber, wood, bone, and animal remains. Directly dated fiber artifacts now place the cave’s earliest confirmed use at approximately 12,100–11,800 calibrated years before present, or roughly 10,150–9,850 BCE. Most evidence indicates repeated, probably brief visits by mobile foragers rather than occupation by a settled farming village.

The inhabitants hunted deer and smaller animals while collecting plants from the valley and neighboring slopes. Excavators recovered edible roots, tubers, rhizomes, fruits, seeds, and gourds. Oca and ulluco have been proposed among the underground storage organs, although some identifications remain tentative. Lúcuma, pacae and other fruits were also reported. These remains demonstrate detailed knowledge of seasonal vegetation, but they do not reveal complete meals or recipes. Roasting in embers, boiling in perishable containers, drying, pounding, or eating foods raw are reasonable possibilities for the period, not directly demonstrated preparation methods for particular Guitarrero specimens.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

Plant use was inseparable from technology. Fibers were cleaned, twisted into cord, knotted, and woven into mats, bags, baskets, or other equipment. Direct AMS dates show that some cordage and twined textiles are approximately 12,000–11,000 years old. Such objects could support gathering, transport, storage, trapping, clothing, and cooking, although the exact function of each fragment is not always recoverable. The sophistication of this perishable technology is direct evidence; assigning its manufacture to a particular gender or treating it as proof of settled life remains an interpretation.

Guitarrero became famous for claims that domesticated common beans and lima beans occurred in deposits as early as the ninth millennium BCE. Direct AMS dating later changed that picture. A common bean from the cave dates to roughly 4,400 radiocarbon years ago, approximately the third millennium BCE, while directly dated lima beans are later still. The younger results suggest that beans entered older-looking layers through disturbance or intrusion. Consequently, the cave securely documents very early plant gathering and fiber working, but it does not securely document bean cultivation between 10,000 and 5,500 BCE.

Its importance therefore lies less in identifying a single moment when farming began than in preserving a long, complicated record of Andean resource use. Tubers, fruits, beans, gourds, and chili peppers later became central to regional food systems, while bags, cords, and baskets remained essential to harvesting and storage. Modern Andean cuisines retain many comparable ingredients, but uninterrupted descent from the cave’s individual plant remains cannot be demonstrated.

Historical context

Glaciers were retreating from the tropical Andes and plant and animal communities were adjusting to rapid climatic change near the end of the Pleistocene and beginning of the Holocene. Guitarrero Cave stood at about 2,580 meters in a temperate intermontane corridor linking the Santa Valley with higher puna environments. Its earliest visitors were mobile foragers using stone points, scrapers, wood, bone, and remarkably complex plant-fiber equipment; pottery and metal vessels were not yet available. Direct dates suggest initial use around 12,100–11,800 calibrated years before present, followed by several short visits around 11,300–10,300 years ago. Farming emerged gradually and unevenly in the Andes, so plant collection, hunting, gardening, and cultivation should not be treated as a single abrupt transition.

Archaeological

StrongExcavated deposits contain stone tools, hearth-associated material, faunal remains, wood, bone, cordage, textiles, and botanical remains documenting repeated human use of the cave.

ModerateExceptional preservation securely demonstrates extensive plant use, including underground storage organs, fruits, seeds, gourds, and fiber plants. Some individual taxonomic identifications, particularly oca and ulluco, were tentative.

Zooarchaeological

StrongAnimal remains include deer and smaller fauna associated with the early cultural complexes, supporting a mixed hunting-and-gathering economy.

Food identification

ModerateCommon and lima beans were morphologically identified, and edible fruits and underground plant organs were reported. Direct dating shows that several beans are much younger than the deposits to which they were originally assigned.
