Jenne-jeno’s Urban West Africa

Reconstruction

Between about 250 BCE and 500 CE, Jenné-jeno grew on a rise in the Inland Niger Delta, near modern Djenné in Mali. Excavation and radiocarbon dating show an iron-using settlement established in the third century BCE and expanding rapidly during the first centuries CE. By around 400 CE it may have covered roughly 25 hectares. This growth occurred within a wider cluster of settlements rather than behind the palace-and-temple core familiar from some other early cities. Archaeologists have found no convincing evidence from this period for a king, citadel or sharply separated urban elite.

Food production was fundamental to the settlement. Carbonized rice and other plant remains, fish bones, and bones from cattle and sheep or goats document an economy adapted to the delta’s seasonal floods. African rice was especially important, although naked archaeological grains can be difficult to distinguish securely between domesticated Oryza glaberrima and related wild rice. Measurements suggest that much of the ancient rice from the Middle Niger resembled the domesticated species. Pearl millet and small quantities of other cereals added diversity, while fishing, livestock keeping, hunting and gathered foods spread risk across different habitats and seasons.

Grinding stones and pottery vessels demonstrate cereal processing and cooking, but no written recipe survives. It is reasonable to reconstruct rice and millet being dehusked or ground and then boiled as whole grain or porridge, yet the exact dishes remain unknown. Fish could have been eaten fresh, cooked in pots or roasted; drying fish for storage and exchange is plausible from later regional practice but has not been directly demonstrated for every early context. Animal bones establish the presence and management of livestock more securely than they reveal particular cuts, seasonings or cooking methods.

Jenné-jeno also depended on exchange. Stone and some iron materials came from outside the floodplain, while copper appearing by approximately 400–500 CE indicates connections reaching much farther. Archaeologists have therefore proposed that surplus rice, fish and other floodplain products helped support regional trade. That remains a scholarly interpretation rather than a directly recorded transaction. The evidence nevertheless shows that substantial urban growth preceded the mature Islamic-era caravan system and cannot simply be explained as a consequence of later North African commerce.

The settlement continued after 500 CE, reaching its greatest extent and influence later in the first millennium before eventual abandonment around 1400. Its early food system remains significant because it demonstrates how African rice cultivation, fishing and mobile herding could sustain dense urban life in a variable floodplain. African rice is still cultivated in West Africa, although Asian rice has replaced it in many fields; modern NERICA varieties deliberately combine genetic material from both cultivated species.

Historical context

Communities across West Africa were expanding iron production, farming and regional exchange without necessarily forming centralized kingdoms. The Inland Niger Delta offered an unusually productive but unpredictable mosaic of channels, flood basins, levees and dry ground. Jenné-jeno emerged before the large Islamic-era states of Ghana, Mali and Songhai and before camel caravans carried heavy goods across the Sahara on their later scale. Its development therefore belongs primarily to an indigenous Middle Niger history of floodplain settlement, food production and interregional exchange.

Archaeological

StrongStratified excavations, radiocarbon dates, settlement survey, architecture, pottery, grinding equipment, ironworking debris and imported materials directly document long occupation and settlement growth.

Archaeobotanical

StrongCarbonized rice and lesser cereal remains directly demonstrate plant use, although preservation and identification vary by excavation context.

Zooarchaeological

StrongFish and domestic livestock bones directly support fishing and herding; osteometric and isotopic work indicates varied cattle and small-ruminant management.

Written sources

LimitedNo contemporary written account describes early Jenné-jeno or its meals. Medieval and later texts concern subsequent settlements and cannot be treated as direct testimony for 250 BCE–500 CE.

Food identification

ModerateRice is securely identified, but many grains lack the husks and spikelet structures most useful for distinguishing domesticated African rice from closely related wild forms. Morphometric comparison favors predominantly domesticated rice.

Dating

StrongStratigraphy and radiocarbon determinations support initial occupation in the third century BCE and continued growth through the first millennium CE.

Preparation method

LimitedGrinding tools and pottery support processing and cooking, but specific recipes, seasoning, fish-preservation methods and forms of service are reconstructions rather than direct observations.

Historical interpretation

ProbableFood surplus and exchange probably contributed to urban growth, but the causal relationship cannot be observed directly. Interpretations of decentralized or heterarchical organization remain scholarly models supported by the absence of clear palatial, elite or state institutions.
