Reconstruction
Between about 3,900 and 2,200 BCE, generations of Jōmon people repeatedly occupied Sannai Maruyama on a coastal terrace beside the Okidate River in what is now Aomori. Excavation has revealed hundreds of pit-dwelling remains, long pit buildings, roads, graves, refuse mounds, storage pits, and post-built structures. These features were not all used simultaneously, and no secure population count exists, but their scale and ordered placement identify the settlement as an unusually substantial regional hub. Its inhabitants maintained sedentary or recurrently sedentary lives without adopting the grain-based farming economy characteristic of many contemporary societies elsewhere.
Food security came from combining forests, rivers, and coastal waters rather than depending on one staple. Waterlogged deposits preserved chestnuts, Japanese walnuts, horse chestnuts, elderberries, wild grapes, and other plant remains, together with bones from fish, birds, and mammals. In one Early Jōmon assemblage, researchers identified roughly 1,400 fish vertebrae; about 83 percent represented small specimens, particularly herring and mackerel. This supports an inference of deliberate mass capture, although the nets, traps, or coordinated fishing methods involved are not directly preserved. Other identified fish occupied different habitats and seasons, indicating broad ecological knowledge.
Chestnut shells, chestnut timber, and pollen records show that chestnut was especially important. The marked prevalence of chestnut around the occupied settlement is widely interpreted as evidence that residents protected, encouraged, or planted useful trees. This was intensive plant management, but it should not automatically be called full agriculture: the degree of cultivation and dependence remains debated. Flask-shaped pits are interpreted as stores for nuts and other provisions. Raised-floor buildings may also have provided storage, although some large post-built structures could instead have served ceremonial or monumental purposes. Grinding stones imply plant processing, while chemical and microscopic study of pottery and charred deposits provides more direct evidence: vessels held aquatic foods, sometimes mixed with plant contributions, and separate charred remains contained starchy plant tissue consistent with nuts.
Together, these technologies—pottery cooking, grinding, storage, managed woodland, seasonal fishing, and durable settlement architecture—helped turn fluctuating wild resources into a dependable annual food system. Sannai Maruyama therefore complicates any simple equation between settled life and cereal farming. It demonstrates that hunter-fisher-gatherers could build long-lived communities supported by planning, accumulated knowledge, exchange, and environmental management. Chestnuts and seafood remain important in northern Japanese cooking, but no uninterrupted descent from particular Sannai Maruyama recipes can be demonstrated. Its strongest modern connection is technological and ecological: diversified seasonal foods can sustain settled communities when harvesting, processing, and storage are carefully coordinated.
Historical context
Northern Honshu lay within a productive temperate environment of deciduous broadleaf forest, rivers, and protected coastal waters. Sannai Maruyama's known occupation extended for well over a millennium, although the hundreds of excavated buildings accumulated through many phases rather than forming one simultaneous town. Pottery, woodworking, basketry, lacquer technology, grinding tools, fishing equipment, and underground storage supported settled life. Jade, obsidian, amber, and asphalt obtained from distant sources show participation in exchange networks extending hundreds of kilometers. During the same broad period, cities and states emerged in Mesopotamia and Egypt and, near its end, in the Indus region; there is no evidence that these developments were connected to Sannai Maruyama.

Archaeological
StrongExcavation directly documents pit dwellings, large pit buildings, post-built structures, storage pits, roads, graves, mounds, pottery, stone tools, wooden objects, baskets, and lacquerware across successive occupation phases.
Archaeobotanical
StrongWaterlogged and charred contexts preserve identified chestnuts, walnuts, horse chestnuts, fruit seeds, wood, and pollen. These directly establish plant use, while deliberate chestnut-grove management remains an inference from vegetation patterns and repeated human selection.
Zooarchaeological
StrongFish, bird, and mammal remains directly document exploitation of aquatic and terrestrial animals. Fine-mesh recovery of an Early Jōmon sample demonstrated a predominance of small fish, including herring and mackerel.
Residue chemical
ModerateLipid and stable-isotope analyses of selected pottery indicate processing of aquatic resources, with possible plant contributions. Charred deposits contain starchy plant tissues and chemical signatures consistent with nuts, but not every residue can be assigned to a species.
Food identification
StrongMacroscopic seeds, nutshells, and bones support many identifications directly. More specific interpretations of mixed pottery contents or fragmented charred plant tissue are less certain.

StrongPottery typology, stratigraphy, and radiocarbon determinations support an Early-to-Middle Jōmon occupation conventionally summarized as approximately 3,900–2,200 BCE, with individual contexts assigned narrower ranges.
Preparation method
ModeratePottery residues, charred deposits, hearths, and grinding stones support cooking and plant processing. Exact recipes, cooking sequences, fishing gear used in particular catches, and methods of nut detoxification are generally reconstructions rather than direct observations.

Historical interpretation
ProbableLong-term sedentism supported by diversified foraging, storage, and managed plant resources is well supported. The settlement's precise population, political organization, degree of chestnut cultivation, and functions of its largest buildings remain debated.
Visual reconstruction
InterpretiveModern full-scale buildings at the site are educational reconstructions based on postholes and comparative evidence. Roof forms, wall materials, elevations, and the appearance or function of the largest six-post structure are not directly preserved.
