Kebara Neanderthals

Kebara Cave, on the western side of Mount Carmel above Israel's coastal plain, preserves one of the Levant's most informative records of Neanderthal life. Repeated Mousterian occupations accumulated meters of ash, hearths, stone tools, animal bones, and plant remains. In 1983 excavators uncovered Kebara 2, a remarkably complete adult male Neanderthal skeleton dating to roughly 60,000 years ago. Its skull and lower legs were absent, but much of the torso, pelvis, arms, and hyoid survived. The body's placement has often been interpreted as deliberate burial, although intentionality remains debated.

The cave's food record comes from the occupation deposits rather than from the skeleton itself. Excavators recovered 3,956 charred seeds representing 52 plant taxa. Approximately 3,300 were legumes; the assemblage also included acorns, pistachio nuts, wild grape, and small numbers of other seeds. Only ten grass grains were identified, including two wild barley grains, suggesting that cereals were not a major preserved food component. Because many remains occurred near hearths, researchers have interpreted much of the collection as dietary refuse. That conclusion is plausible rather than automatic: plants could also enter fires with wood, tinder, bedding, or material gathered incidentally.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

Animal remains provide complementary evidence. Gazelle and fallow deer were important prey, and cut marks, skeletal-part representation, fragmentation, and burning document carcass transport, butchery, marrow extraction, and exposure of some bones to fire. Spur-thighed tortoises were also collected for food and possibly for use of their shells as containers. These finds indicate skilled hunting combined with gathering and the exploitation of small, easily transported animals.

Numerous superimposed combustion features demonstrate repeated, controlled fire use, principally with wood fuel. Fires supplied heat and light and probably supported food preparation, but the exact dishes cannot be reconstructed. Meat may sometimes have been roasted, and legumes or nuts may have been parched, yet burned bones and seeds do not by themselves prove a particular cooking technique. There is no direct evidence here for pottery cooking, boiling, seasoning, or formal recipes.

Kebara therefore matters less as the birthplace of a recognizable dish than as evidence for flexible Ice Age foodways. Its occupants organized recurring activities around hearths and drew food from different seasons: legumes were interpreted as a spring resource, while acorns and pistachios indicate some autumn gathering. The combination of hunted ungulates, tortoises, and wild plants challenges any simple picture of Neanderthals as exclusively large-game meat eaters. Legumes, nuts, and fire-cooked animal foods remain familiar today, but agriculture and domesticated pulses arose tens of millennia later; no continuous culinary lineage from Kebara can presently be demonstrated.

Historical context

During the later Pleistocene, the eastern Mediterranean experienced repeated climatic shifts between cooler, drier conditions and milder intervals. People lived in small, mobile foraging groups without agriculture, pottery, or permanent towns. The Levant formed a corridor between Africa and Eurasia, and its caves preserve alternating or successive occupations by Neanderthals and Homo sapiens across the wider Middle Paleolithic. At Kebara, repeated occupations created more than four meters of deposits, showing that a cave could serve as a recurrent base rather than a continuously inhabited settlement.

Archaeological

StrongStratified Mousterian deposits contain a Neanderthal skeleton, lithic artifacts, combustion features, faunal remains, and charred plant material from repeated occupations.

Archaeobotanical

StrongThousands of charred seeds were directly recovered and taxonomically studied, including abundant legumes, acorns, pistachios, wild grape, and a very small cereal component. Their use as food is an interpretation based partly on context.

Zooarchaeological

StrongUngulate and tortoise remains preserve evidence of human acquisition and processing, including cut marks, fragmentation, skeletal-part patterns, and burning.

Residue chemical

ModerateMineralogical, phytolith, and micromorphological analyses identify anthropogenic combustion deposits and wood as the principal fuel, while also documenting alteration after deposition.

Food identification

ModeratePlant and animal taxa are securely identified, but not every charred seed, burned bone, or phytolith necessarily represents food consumption.

Dating

ModerateThermoluminescence and electron-spin-resonance studies place the relevant Mousterian sequence broadly around 60,000–48,000 years BP, with uncertainty attached to individual layers and the conversion between BP and BCE.

Preparation method

LimitedButchery and repeated fire use are documented. Roasting, parching, or other cooking methods are reasonable possibilities but cannot be assigned confidently to particular foods.
