Krapina Neanderthals

At Hušnjakovo Hill near Krapina, a sandstone rock shelter preserved one of the largest collections of Neanderthal remains recovered from a single locality. Dragutin Gorjanović-Kramberger directed excavations from 1899 to 1905, collecting hundreds of human bones and teeth, more than 800 stone artifacts, and roughly 2,800 animal remains. The shelter was subsequently emptied of sediment, so modern research depends heavily on the surviving collections and early excavation records.

Electron-spin-resonance and uranium-series work places the principal deposits at approximately 130,000 years ago, with uncertainty of roughly ten millennia. This corresponds broadly to the warm last-interglacial environment of Marine Isotope Stage 5e. Faunal evidence, including relatively small cave bears associated with interglacial conditions, suggests that sediment accumulated over a comparatively short interval, probably less than 10,000 years.

The animal assemblage reveals the potential foods available around Krapina, but it is not a menu. Large mammals dominate minimum-individual counts, particularly rhinoceroses, bears, and bison or wild cattle; deer, pigs, beavers, small carnivores, birds, tortoise, and freshwater mollusks are also represented. Later zooarchaeological study reported burning on about 13.6 percent of mammalian specimens and stone-tool cut marks on about 4.1 percent. These traces provide direct evidence that Neanderthals processed at least some animal carcasses and exposed bones to fire. They do not establish that every represented species was hunted or eaten, because carnivores, natural deaths, water movement, and other processes also contributed material.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

Cutting meat from large carcasses would have been done with Mousterian stone flakes and related tools. Fire could roast meat, warm or dry it, assist access to fat, or simply burn discarded bones accidentally; the surviving evidence cannot distinguish these possibilities consistently. No published plant remains securely identify vegetable foods at Krapina, so plants, fungi, nuts, or underground storage organs should not be added to its reconstructed diet merely because Neanderthals ate such foods elsewhere.

The human remains are exceptionally fragmented, inspiring long-standing claims of cannibalism. That interpretation remains disputed. Studies have attributed substantial damage to excavation, quarrying, sediment pressure, and rockfall. Some incisions may reflect deliberate postmortem defleshing, but whether this represented mortuary treatment, cannibalism, or another practice is unresolved. Human flesh therefore cannot responsibly be listed as a demonstrated Krapina food.

Modified white-tailed eagle talons add another dimension: cut marks, polish, and notches support their probable assembly as an ornament rather than food waste. Krapina’s importance to food history lies not in a surviving recipe but in the careful separation of carcass processing, burning, natural accumulation, and contested interpretations. The same analytical caution remains fundamental when reconstructing prehistoric hunting, cooking, and eating today.

Historical context

Around 130,000 years ago, Europe was entering or experiencing the last interglacial, Marine Isotope Stage 5e, when temperatures in many regions were comparable to or warmer than recent preindustrial conditions and sea level was substantially higher than today. Northwestern Croatia supported temperate habitats containing rhinoceroses, wild bovids, deer, bears, beavers, and white-tailed eagles. Neanderthals occupied Europe and western Asia in small, dispersed foraging populations, while Homo sapiens was established in Africa and parts of southwest Asia. Agriculture, pottery, metal tools, permanent towns, and domesticated livestock remained more than 100,000 years in the future.

Archaeological

StrongStratified excavations produced hundreds of Neanderthal skeletal remains, more than 800 Middle Paleolithic stone artifacts, and approximately 2,800 faunal remains, although excavation occurred before modern recovery standards.

Zooarchaeological

ModerateThe curated fauna securely documents numerous large and small animal taxa. Cut marks and burning on subsets of mammalian bones support some human processing, but natural and carnivore accumulation also affected the assemblage.

StrongElectron-spin-resonance and uranium-series analyses support an age near 130,000 years, commonly expressed as approximately 130 ± 10 ka and associated broadly with MIS 5e.

Food identification

LimitedProcessed mammal tissue is defensible in general, but the presence of a species in the shelter does not by itself prove consumption. No secure plant-food assemblage has been published for Krapina.

Preparation method

ModerateStone-tool cut marks directly support carcass processing, and burned bones establish contact with fire. Roasting, drying, marrow extraction, accidental burning, and waste disposal cannot always be distinguished.

Historical interpretation

InterpretiveCannibalism and mortuary defleshing have both been proposed for the fragmented human remains. Excavation damage, sediment pressure, and roof fall explain substantial breakage, and no single behavioral interpretation commands universal agreement.

Visual reconstruction

LimitedNeanderthal anatomy, Mousterian tools, fauna, and the rock-shelter setting can be reconstructed from surviving evidence, but clothing, food portions, cooking arrangements, group composition, and moment-to-moment activities remain conjectural.
