Reconstruction
Between approximately 3300 and 2300 BCE, communities near the eastern foot of the Tianmu Mountains transformed a wet, river-crossed landscape into the political and ceremonial center now called Liangzhu City. Builders raised massive earthen platforms, enclosed urban spaces with walls and waterways, and constructed dams and levees north of the center. Richly furnished cemeteries, where selected people were buried with meticulously worked jade cong tubes, bi discs and other objects, reveal pronounced social differentiation. Rice agriculture supplied the economic foundation beneath this concentration of labor, ritual authority and specialized production.
The food evidence is unusually substantial for a society without readable historical texts. Carbonized rice occurs across Liangzhu sites, while large concentrations inside the city indicate storage on a scale exceeding household needs. At Maoshan, roughly 20 kilometers east of the center, archaeologists identified settlements beside successive generations of paddy fields. Early plots were often no larger than about 40 square meters; later fields reached roughly 1,000–2,000 square meters and were connected with creeks, wells and ditches. This demonstrates agricultural intensification and collective water management, although it does not prove that every part of Liangzhu’s regional hydraulic system was designed primarily for irrigation.
Rice dominated, but it was not necessarily the only food. At Zhumucun, a Liangzhu-period village east of Lake Tai, flotation recovered domesticated rice alongside melon remains, fruits and possible vegetables or gathered herbs. Regional animal evidence also shows that diets varied. At the peripheral Jiangzhuang settlement, deer were particularly important, while domestic pigs, wild boar and intermediate suids were represented. These findings caution against imagining one uniform Liangzhu menu. The precise meals served inside the capital remain poorly known. Ceramic ding tripods functioned as cooking vessels, but archaeology usually cannot determine whether a particular batch of rice became boiled grain, porridge or another preparation.
Liangzhu’s waterworks were probably multifunctional. Dams and reservoirs could regulate seasonal water, reduce flood risk and improve movement through the landscape. Reconstructed waterways also offer a plausible means of carrying construction stone, crops and other resources toward the center. Evidence for centralized collection or redistribution of rice is stronger than evidence for market-style food trade, and the political mechanisms remain interpretive.
Liangzhu matters because it shows how managed wetlands, intensive rice farming and organized storage could sustain early urbanism in the lower Yangtze. Modern paddies and rice-based cuisines in the region belong to a much longer history of wet-rice agriculture, but no direct continuity can be demonstrated between Liangzhu institutions or recipes and those of today.
Historical context
The Yangtze delta was becoming a freshwater-rich coastal plain as sediment accumulated around wetlands and former embayments. Liangzhu developed during a wider era of early urban growth: Uruk cities flourished in Mesopotamia, a territorial state formed in dynastic Egypt, and communities in the Indus basin were moving toward later urbanization. In northern China, many settlements relied principally on millet, while lower-Yangtze communities had already spent millennia cultivating and progressively domesticating rice. Liangzhu’s city, surrounding settlements and waterworks therefore formed one regional expression of a broader late-fourth- and third-millennium BCE transformation toward larger, more hierarchical societies.

Archaeological
StrongExcavated city walls, earthen platforms, dams, levees, waterways, storage contexts, cemeteries and artifacts directly establish a large, planned and socially differentiated settlement complex.

StrongCarbonized rice, rice phytoliths, excavated paddy soils and associated field infrastructure directly support intensive rice cultivation and storage. Melons and other plant resources are documented at related Liangzhu settlements, not necessarily within the urban center.
Zooarchaeological
ModerateFaunal assemblages from Liangzhu-period settlements document pigs, wild boar, deer and other animals, but subsistence varied across the cultural region and peripheral evidence cannot automatically reconstruct the city's diet.

StrongRadiocarbon dating, optically stimulated luminescence dating, stratigraphy and artifact typology support the broad Liangzhu chronology of approximately 3300–2300 BCE and place major hydraulic construction near the beginning of that interval.
Preparation method
LimitedCeramic ding tripods are supported as cooking vessels, but particular recipes and the proportions of boiled, steamed or porridge-like rice cannot usually be identified directly.
Geographic attribution
StrongThe urban center and associated hydraulic works are securely located in present-day Yuhang District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, within the wider Lake Tai and lower-Yangtze Liangzhu cultural region.
Historical interpretation
ModerateInterpreting Liangzhu as an early regional state supported by rice agriculture is well grounded in settlement hierarchy, monumental works and differentiated burials. The exact institutions governing labor, storage and redistribution remain uncertain.
