Mehrgarh’s First Farmers

Reconstruction

Mehrgarh occupied the Kachi Plain near the Bolan Pass, a natural corridor between the Iranian highlands and the Indus basin. Excavation revealed successive mudbrick buildings, cemeteries, tools, plant remains and animal bones documenting a community increasingly committed to cultivation and herding. The site was long assigned an aceramic Neolithic beginning around 7000 BCE or earlier. New radiocarbon measurements from human tooth enamel, published in 2025, instead place Period I within approximately 5250–4650 BCE. The traditional chronology therefore remains historically important but is no longer the strongest available dating.

Barley and several forms of wheat constituted the principal identified crops. Archaeobotanical studies indicate that much of this cereal tradition had western connections: wheat and probably some barley varieties were introduced rather than independently domesticated on the Kachi Plain. At the same time, Mehrgarh participated in regional developments involving zebu cattle. Sheep and goats—goats probably arriving through western dispersal networks—also became important. Faunal patterns suggest a transition rather than an instantaneous agricultural revolution: hunted animals remained significant in early deposits while cattle and caprines gained prominence through the sequence.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

The excavated tools reveal parts of the food-production process without preserving complete meals. Stone-bladed sickles are consistent with cereal harvesting, while querns, grinding stones and pestles indicate grain processing. Hearths demonstrate cooking, but no securely identified bread, porridge or other finished dish permits a precise menu. Cereals could reasonably have been roasted, cracked, ground or boiled, yet these preparations remain reconstructions rather than direct observations. Meat from hunted and managed animals supplemented plant foods; evidence for the scale of dairying is insufficient.

Architecture was equally important to the emerging food system. Period I contained superimposed mudbrick structures, while the following Period II introduced large compartmented buildings commonly interpreted as storage facilities. Cereal impressions, especially barley, strengthen that interpretation, although not every compartmented structure need have been a granary. Durable construction and storage would have helped households coordinate harvests, protect reserves and remain in one place for longer periods.

Mehrgarh matters because it records an early agricultural community at the meeting point of South and Southwest Asia. Its crops and livestock helped establish the mixed winter-cereal and herding economy later developed across the greater Indus region. Wheat, barley, cattle, sheep and goats remain major foods there today, but this is continuity in agricultural resources, not evidence that any modern recipe descends directly from Mehrgarh. The site instead documents the deeper infrastructure of settled food life: cultivation, managed herds, processing tools, storage and cooperation.

Historical context

Using the revised chronology of approximately 5250–4650 BCE, village farming was already established across parts of Iran and Mesopotamia, while pottery traditions and irrigation-based communities were expanding west of the Indus. Mehrgarh stood beside the Bolan Pass, connecting the Kachi Plain with upland routes toward Afghanistan and the Iranian Plateau. South Asia did not follow one uniform path into farming: northwestern communities adopted western-derived wheat, barley and caprines, while other regions developed different plant economies. The urban Indus cities still lay more than two millennia in the future.

Archaeological

StrongExcavations directly document superimposed mudbrick architecture, cemeteries, sickle elements, grinding equipment, hearths and later compartmented storage structures.

Archaeobotanical

StrongRecovered cereal remains and impressions identify barley and multiple wheat forms, although their relative abundance and domestication status varied through the sequence.

Zooarchaeological

ModerateAnimal bones document cattle, sheep, goats and hunted fauna and support a transition toward herding. The exact timing and location of domestication for each species remain subjects of interpretation.

Food identification

ModerateCereal grains and animal taxa are identifiable, but the evidence does not directly preserve complete meals or establish how frequently each food was eaten.

Dating

StrongAMS radiocarbon dating of tooth enamel from 23 burials and Bayesian modelling place Period I within approximately 5250–4650 BCE, materially revising the older 7000–5500 BCE chronology.

Preparation method

LimitedSickles, querns, grinding stones, pestles and hearths demonstrate harvesting, comminution and cooking, but particular preparations such as bread or porridge are reasonable reconstructions rather than directly identified foods.

Geographic attribution

StrongThe excavated mounds are securely located on the Kachi Plain in Balochistan near the mouth of the Bolan Pass.

Historical interpretation

ProbableMehrgarh clearly represents an early mixed farming community, but the balance between migration, transmitted knowledge and local domestication is debated and has been altered by the revised chronology.

Visual reconstruction

InterpretiveAny depiction of fields, meals, clothing, domestic routines or food service must combine excavated evidence with comparative reconstruction because these activities were not directly observed.
