Mohenjo-daro’s Predecessors at Mehrgarh

Reconstruction

At Mehrgarh, near the Bolan Pass in present-day Balochistan, generations of farmers built, abandoned and rebuilt mud-brick structures until their settlements formed deep archaeological mounds. The conventional chronology assigned the site’s later Neolithic and Chalcolithic phases to roughly 5500–2600 BCE. A major radiocarbon study published in 2025, however, dated the preceding aceramic cemetery to about 5250–4650 BCE, implying that the later sequence began substantially later than older chronologies proposed. The exact dates of individual later phases therefore require reassessment.

Whatever their revised calendar dates, these phases document an increasingly elaborate village economy. Plant remains and impressions attest barley and several wheats, while date remains and, in later levels, grape pips broaden the known plant repertoire. Animal bones indicate reliance on cattle, sheep and goats. These finds identify resources, not recipes: no text records what Mehrgarh’s inhabitants called their meals. Grinding stones and pestles nevertheless show that cereals were processed, probably into meal suitable for porridges, flat cakes or other preparations. Such foods are reasonable reconstructions rather than directly observed dishes.

Pottery altered how food could be stored, carried, cooked and served. Early handmade vessels were followed by increasingly regular wheel-made and painted wares. Compartmented mud-brick buildings are often interpreted as storage facilities, although their exact contents and management remain debated. Together, containers, storage architecture and grain-processing tools suggest households capable of retaining harvests and coordinating labor beyond immediate consumption.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

Mehrgarh also became a center of specialized production. Excavators recovered evidence for bead drilling, shell working, stone-tool manufacture, pottery production and copper working. Mineralized threads preserved inside a sixth-millennium copper bead were identified as cotton, demonstrating remarkably early fiber use, although not cotton’s use as food. Shell and stones obtained from outside the Kachi Plain reveal exchange connections. These networks could have moved crops, livestock or food knowledge as well, but direct evidence for commerce in prepared foods is insufficient.

By around 2600 BCE, settlement activity shifted toward Nausharo, about six kilometers away, while major Indus cities such as Mohenjo-daro entered their mature urban phase elsewhere. Mehrgarh should consequently be understood as part of a long and regionally branching development, not as a proven single ancestral community that founded Mohenjo-daro. Its enduring significance lies in showing how cereal farming, herding, storage, pottery and specialist exchange accumulated before Indus urbanism. Wheat, barley, cattle and cotton remain economically important in South Asia today, but this continuity concerns crops, animals and technologies rather than an archaeologically demonstrated survival of particular Mehrgarh recipes.

Historical context

Communities across Balochistan were becoming more numerous and interconnected: one scholarly synthesis reports approximately 84 known settlements for the Togau phase, around 4300–3800 BCE, and 153 for the succeeding Kechi Beg phase, around 3800–3200 BCE. The Bolan Pass connected the Kachi Plain with upland routes toward Afghanistan and the Iranian Plateau. During the late fourth and early third millennia BCE, regional pottery styles, metalworking and exchange intensified as towns also expanded across the greater Indus region. The conventional chronology for these developments is now under review because radiocarbon results published in 2025 place Mehrgarh’s preceding aceramic cemetery much later than previously believed.

Residue chemical

StrongMicroscopic analysis identified mineralized cotton fibers preserved within a copper bead. This is direct evidence of fiber use, not evidence that cottonseed was eaten.

Food identification

ModerateCereal and fruit taxa are supported by archaeobotanical evidence, but specific meals such as porridge or bread remain reasonable reconstructions rather than identified dishes.

Dating

LimitedThe traditional phase chronology remains widely cited, but 2025 tooth-enamel radiocarbon dates place Period I around 5250–4650 BCE and make the older start dates for subsequent phases untenable without reanalysis.
