Reconstruction
In 1967, Kamoya Kimeu recovered the fragmentary skeleton called Omo I at Kamoya’s Hominid Site in southwestern Ethiopia. The expedition was directed by Richard Leakey, and later fieldwork relocated the discovery area and recovered additional pieces of the same individual. Omo I includes much of a cranial vault, parts of the face and lower jaw, teeth, and numerous bones from below the skull. Its anatomy is generally assigned to Homo sapiens, although it retains some features not typical of most recent humans. The fossil is therefore important evidence for the early anatomical history of our species in eastern Africa.
Omo I’s age has repeatedly been revised. Research published in 2022 chemically matched an ash bed overlying the fossil-bearing Member I deposits to a major eruption of Ethiopia’s Shala volcano. The eruption was dated to 233 ± 22 thousand years ago, making that figure a minimum-age constraint: Omo I must predate the ash, but the analysis does not establish the individual’s exact age or a secure maximum age. Omo I is consequently among the oldest known Homo sapiens fossils in eastern Africa, though older fossils attributed to our species are known at Jebel Irhoud in Morocco.
No published evidence securely identifies a particular meal eaten by Omo I. The skeleton was not accompanied by a preserved meal, and the surrounding animal fossils cannot automatically be treated as food remains. Archaeologists did recover flaking debris at the discovery site, while renewed excavations found Middle Stone Age assemblages elsewhere in Members I and III. Knappers selected pebbles from local gravels and reduced them through radial, centripetal Levallois, and discoidal methods. Bifacial implements also occur, but retouched tools are comparatively uncommon. Such equipment could have served many cutting, scraping, woodworking, and food-processing tasks; assigning any specific task without use-wear or residue evidence would be reconstruction rather than observation.
The wider Kibish Formation preserves bovids, equids, suids, hippopotamuses, birds, crocodiles, and abundant fish. Catfish and Nile perch dominate the studied fish assemblage. These remains show that the lower Omo offered grassland, woodland, wetland, river, and lake-edge resources under conditions generally wetter than those of the recent landscape. It is reasonable to reconstruct local humans as mobile foragers able to draw on animal and plant foods, but neither the proportion of those foods nor their preparation methods is known for Omo I.
Omo I matters to food history precisely because the evidence resists a tidy menu. The site links an early member of Homo sapiens with a resource-rich African river landscape and Middle Stone Age technology, not with a single documented diet. Its defensible modern lesson is methodological: claims about one universal ancestral “Paleo diet” exceed what this fossil can tell us. Early human foodways were probably locally adaptive, but at Omo Kibish the actual foods remain unknown.
Historical context
The world was in the Middle Pleistocene, long before farming, herding, pottery, or permanent towns. Human populations were small, dispersed, and dependent on foraging. Homo sapiens had already appeared elsewhere in Africa: the Jebel Irhoud fossils in Morocco are dated to about 315,000 years ago. Around the lower Omo, strong rainfall episodes periodically raised river discharge and Lake Turkana, depositing sediments across a broad floodplain. Middle Stone Age stone-working traditions were established in several African regions, but evidence does not support a single uniform technology, population, or diet across the continent.
