Reconstruction
The peanut, Arachis hypogaea, is a South American domesticate whose pods mature underground. Genetic and botanical research places its ancestry in South America, although the precise location and sequence of domestication remain debated. By the time Portuguese mariners established regular connections among Brazil, Cape Verde and the Upper Guinea coast, Indigenous American farmers had already developed diverse cultivated peanuts. Ships moving through this new Atlantic network provided the most plausible route by which viable seed reached western Africa.
Historical syntheses report peanut cultivation in Guinea or Senegambia by the 1560s, making a sixteenth-century introduction probable. Portuguese or Luso-African traders were likely involved, but the surviving evidence does not identify a particular shipment, port or farmer. Archaeobotanical confirmation is sparse, and early names can be difficult to interpret because Africans already grew indigenous geocarpic legumes, especially Bambara groundnut. Familiarity with crops whose pods formed below the soil may have made the newcomer intelligible, but that is a reasonable reconstruction rather than direct observation.
Peanuts suited parts of the West African savanna because they could grow as a rain-fed crop in warm conditions and relatively well-drained soils. Farmers would have saved seed, planted kernels and lifted the plants when their subterranean pods matured. Later evidence documents peanuts eaten whole, pounded into pastes, incorporated into sauces and stews, or pressed for oil. These uses are well established in subsequent West African foodways, but sources do not permit a detailed reconstruction of a specifically sixteenth-century Senegambian peanut recipe. Modern tomato-rich or chili-seasoned preparations should not automatically be projected back onto the first decades of adoption.
The initial transfer also should not be confused with the region's later export economy. Large-scale commercialization began along the Gambia River in the early 1830s and expanded through Senegal and the Upper Guinea coast during the nineteenth century. European demand for oil and soap-making materials then transformed peanuts into a major cash crop, with extensive consequences for labor, land use and political power. That boom occurred centuries after the plant first arrived.
Peanuts also acquired a second Atlantic history. Slave ships and plantation societies carried African-grown foods and African agricultural knowledge toward the Caribbean and North America. Scholarship supports an important role for enslaved Africans in cultivating and popularizing peanuts there, although routes varied and cannot be reduced to a single return voyage. Today's groundnut sauces, roasted and boiled peanuts, cooking oils and diaspora dishes therefore reflect several stages: South American domestication, early-modern transfer to Africa, African culinary adaptation, forced migration and later commercial agriculture.
Historical context
Portuguese-controlled Cape Verde linked Brazil, Iberia and the Upper Guinea coast. Ribeira Grande on Santiago, founded in the 1460s, became a major Atlantic port serving routes to Africa, the Americas and around the Cape of Good Hope. Senegambia was not an isolated receiving zone: African merchants and farming communities already participated in coastal, riverine and inland exchange networks. Farther east, the Songhai Empire dominated much of the western Sahel until a Moroccan army defeated it at Tondibi in 1591. The peanut arrived amid expanding maritime commerce, political upheaval and the accelerating forced movement of Africans across the Atlantic.
