Reconstruction
Peanuts did not originate anywhere near Goa, Java, or China. Cultivated peanut, Arachis hypogaea, is a South American legume descended from wild Arachis lineages associated with the southern Bolivia–northwestern Argentina region. Indigenous American communities had domesticated and dispersed it long before Europeans crossed the Atlantic. Its arrival in Asia belonged to the rapid redistribution of crops that followed Iberian maritime expansion.
Portuguese ships connected Brazil and Atlantic Africa with Goa, Malacca, and other Indian Ocean ports during the sixteenth century. Botanical histories therefore commonly reconstruct a route carrying Brazilian peanuts through Africa to southwestern India. Goa is a plausible transfer hub, but surviving evidence does not prove that every Asian peanut passed through it. Spanish shipping also carried American peanuts westward across the Pacific, while Dutch merchants may have introduced additional material into Indonesia during the seventeenth century. Asian dispersal was consequently a braided process involving European, African, American, and—crucially—Asian merchants and cultivators.
China supplies unusually early written evidence. A text by the scholar Huang Xingzeng, who died in 1540, describes a plant cultivated near present-day Shanghai whose flowers produced underground pods. Its name, luohuasheng, or “born from fallen flowers,” and its growth habit strongly support identification as peanut. Historian Ping-ti Ho consequently argued that peanuts had entered maritime China by the 1530s, possibly through Portuguese contact or Fujianese traders who encountered the crop in Southeast Asian ports. This predates the card’s nominal starting date, although wider propagation continued through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The plant rewarded agricultural experimentation. After pollination, each flower produces a peg that grows into loose soil, where the pod develops. Farmers sowed kernels in warm, well-drained ground, lifted the plants when mature, dried the pods, and shelled them by hand. Kernels could be boiled or roasted, incorporated into sauces and sweets, or crushed for cooking oil. Chinese historical research indicates that peanuts remained a banquet delicacy in some areas even while specialized coastal districts developed peanut and peanut-oil production before 1700. Evidence for their earliest culinary treatment in India and Southeast Asia is less precise.
Peanuts became far more consequential after this initial transfer. Short-season forms fitted rainfed fields, rotations, and post-rice cultivation, while kernels supplied concentrated fat and protein and could be sold for cash. Over later centuries, groundnut oil became important in India and China, and peanut sauces became characteristic of several Southeast Asian cuisines. Modern breeding, mechanized pressing, and global commodity markets transformed production, but today’s roasted peanuts, cooking oils, chutneys, and sauces still reflect the crop’s early-modern passage from Indigenous American agriculture into Asian farming and foodways.
Historical context
Portuguese power linked ports rather than controlling a continuous territorial empire. Goa, captured in 1510, became the capital of the Estado da Índia; Malacca had fallen to Portugal in 1511, and a permanent Portuguese settlement developed at Macau in 1557. Spanish ships established a trans-Pacific connection between the Americas and the Philippines after 1565. India was increasingly shaped by the Mughal Empire, while Ming rule in China ended in 1644. These overlapping maritime and political systems moved seeds through voyages spanning thousands of kilometres, often through Asian commercial intermediaries rather than direct European delivery.
