Potato and Quinoa Farmers at Jiskairumoko

Reconstruction

Between about 3400 and 1600 BCE, people repeatedly occupied Jiskairumoko, a high-altitude settlement in the Ilave drainage west of Lake Titicaca. Excavation revealed a gradual movement toward longer residence and village life rather than an abrupt agricultural revolution. By approximately 2300 BCE, five pit houses stood in a circular arrangement. Storage alcoves in individual houses held roughly 130–150 liters, while repaired floors, organized refuse disposal, and repeated remodeling indicate sustained household occupation.

Food evidence comes from several independent archaeological records. Starch analysis of fourteen ground-stone tools recovered 141 grains, including fifty assigned to Solanum and judged consistent with cultivated or domesticated potato. Potato starch occurred on tools from multiple occupational phases. The identification is direct evidence that people processed potato-like tubers, but it does not by itself prove that every tuber was domesticated or grown in fields. Chenopod remains provide evidence for quinoa-related foods: a small sample of seeds had thin coats associated with domesticated forms, although preservation and sample size limit certainty. Other tuber starches were attributed more broadly to Ullucus or Oxalis, while animal remains include camelids and taruca deer.

The ground stones were general-purpose implements rather than specialized potato mills. Individual artifacts carried mixtures of starches, suggesting that households processed several plants with the same equipment. Crushing or grinding may have prepared tubers and seeds for cooking, but no complete recipe survives. Researchers have proposed that grinding could also have assisted the detoxification of bitter potatoes, possibly alongside edible clay, a documented Andean practice; at Jiskairumoko, however, that specific procedure remains an informed hypothesis rather than a directly observed fact.

Food production was connected to storage, mobility, herding, hunting, and exchange. Chemical sourcing of sixty-eight obsidian artifacts assigned sixty-six to the distant Chivay source. This demonstrates regular access to nonlocal stone; linking that movement specifically to llama caravans is plausible but remains an archaeological inference. Camelids supplied meat and may increasingly have served as managed livestock and transport animals, while wild game continued to contribute to meals.

Jiskairumoko therefore records a mixed economy, not a simple replacement of foraging by farming. Local households combined intensive plant use, probable cultivation, animal management, hunting, storage, and regional connections. Later evidence across the Titicaca Basin shows that quinoa, potatoes, other tubers, and camelid products remained central to regional foodways for millennia. Those foods still characterize highland Andean agriculture and cuisine today, although no particular modern dish can be traced directly to a Jiskairumoko meal.

Historical context

Jiskairumoko stood about 4,100 meters above sea level in a cold, frost-prone landscape where Lake Titicaca and its tributaries moderated local conditions. Rising lake levels and greater precipitation helped create productive river terraces during part of the occupation. The settlement's five-house hamlet was small, but its storage facilities and long-used domestic spaces mark an important change from more mobile lifeways. Obsidian from Chivay shows that residents participated in connections extending well beyond the Ilave drainage. Elsewhere during this long interval, cities and states were developing in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Indus region, but Titicaca communities followed an independent trajectory founded on native tubers, chenopods, camelids, and high-altitude exchange.

Archaeological

StrongExcavated pit houses, storage alcoves, remodeled surfaces, refuse patterns, grinding tools, burials, faunal remains, and sourced obsidian directly document sustained occupation and household activity.

Archaeobotanical

StrongPotato-consistent starch grains were recovered from securely associated ground-stone tools spanning several occupational phases, and chenopod seeds and other plant microremains were also recovered.

Zooarchaeological

ModerateCamelid and taruca remains support animal consumption, but distinguishing wild from domesticated camelids and reconstructing the relative dietary contribution of each remain more difficult.

Food identification

ModerateThe Solanum starch is consistent with cultivated or domesticated potato, but starch morphology cannot conclusively establish the domestication status of every processed tuber. Some chenopod seeds show domestication traits, although the diagnostic sample is small.

Dating

StrongNumerous radiocarbon determinations, supported by stratigraphy, architecture, projectile-point sequences, and early ceramics, place the principal occupation within the Late Archaic through Early Formative periods.

Preparation method

ProbableStarch adhering to manos and metates demonstrates contact during processing. Grinding or crushing is probable, but specific recipes, cooking methods, and the proposed detoxification of bitter potatoes are not directly demonstrated.

Geographic attribution

StrongJiskairumoko is securely located in the upper Ilave drainage of the western Lake Titicaca Basin in southern Peru.

Historical interpretation

ModerateThe evidence supports increasing sedentism and a mixed agropastoral economy. Regular obsidian procurement is directly supported, whereas organized llama-caravan transport and the precise balance between farming, herding, hunting, and gathering are scholarly inferences.
