The Uluburun Shipwreck

Reconstruction

In 1982, a Turkish sponge diver reported metal objects resembling “biscuits with ears” on the seabed near Uluburun, a headland southeast of Kaş. They proved to be copper ingots from a Late Bronze Age shipwreck. Excavated by the Institute of Nautical Archaeology over eleven campaigns from 1984 to 1994, the wreck preserved part of a cedar-built vessel and nearly seventeen metric tons of objects. Its sinking is conventionally placed in the late fourteenth century BCE, often expressed as about 1320 ±15 BCE, although the exact year remains debated.

The bulk cargo included roughly ten metric tons of copper and about one metric ton of tin—the principal ingredients of bronze—alongside glass ingots, ivory, ebony, pottery, jewelry, tools, weapons and other valuable materials. Food and plant products formed a less visually spectacular but historically important part of the assemblage. Archaeobotanical sampling identified figs, grapes, olives, pomegranates, almonds, pine nuts, pistachios, barley, wheat, pulses, coriander, safflower, sumac and black cumin. Their remains occurred in jars, large storage vessels and sediments dispersed across the wreck.

These finds do not constitute a shipboard menu. Some plants were commercial cargo, some may have been provisions, and others could have entered containers through packing, reuse or movement after the sinking. Thousands of pomegranate seeds and fragments, including concentrations inside large vessels, support deliberate storage, but whether pomegranates were an elite commodity or an ordinary food remains uncertain. Figs may have traveled fresh, dried or pressed into a compact product; archaeology cannot securely distinguish among these preparations. Olives and nuts were durable foods suitable for a voyage, but their precise division between trade goods and crew supplies is unresolved.

Nearly 150 Levantine transport amphorae were also aboard. Many contained substantial quantities of Pistacia resin, probably approaching a metric ton in total. Resin had uses as incense, varnish and possibly in food or drink processing. Chemical re-examination found that proposed evidence for wine mixed with the resin was not secure because Pistacia fruit itself could produce misleading markers. Wine and olive oil may have been carried elsewhere aboard, but neither should be treated as conclusively identified in every jar.

The wreck demonstrates that Mediterranean exchange moved perishable produce and aromatics together with metals and prestige goods. Pottery and objects connect the cargo with Cyprus, the Levant, Egypt and the Aegean, although a precise itinerary—and whether the venture was royal, diplomatic or commercial—remains reconstructed rather than observed. Its modern significance lies in showing that long-distance food logistics, containerized transport and the trade in concentrated, durable plant products were already integral to complex maritime economies more than three millennia ago.

Historical context

Egypt was in or near the Amarna age, the Hittite Empire dominated much of Anatolia, prosperous ports such as Ugarit connected inland kingdoms to the sea, and Mycenaean palace states controlled parts of the Aegean. Cyprus was a major copper-producing center. Ships could link these regions across voyages of hundreds or thousands of kilometers, carrying standardized metal ingots, ceramic transport jars and luxury materials. The Uluburun wreck predates the widespread political disruptions traditionally associated with the eastern Mediterranean collapse around 1200 BCE by roughly a century.

Archaeological

Archaeobotanical

StrongIdentified seeds, stones, nutshells and other plant remains directly demonstrate the presence of fruits, nuts, cereals, pulses, herbs and spices, although not every specimen was necessarily commercial cargo.

Residue chemical

StrongChemical analyses characterize the large amphora cargo as Pistacia resin. The same research found that previously proposed wine indicators could arise from Pistacia material, weakening claims that these amphorae held resin mixed with wine.

Food identification

StrongDiagnostic botanical remains securely identify foods including pomegranate, fig, grape, olive, almond and coriander. Claims for specific processed forms, such as dried figs, pressed fig cakes, wine or olive oil, are less secure.

Dating

ModerateCeramic chronology, radiocarbon measurements and tree-ring evidence place the wreck in the late fourteenth century BCE, but preservation problems and chronological calibration prevent agreement on a single sinking year.

Preparation method

LimitedContainers and concentrations demonstrate storage and transport, but they rarely reveal whether fruits were fresh, dried, pressed or otherwise processed. No complete dish can be reconstructed.

Geographic attribution

ModeratePottery styles, raw materials and manufactured objects connect the assemblage with several eastern Mediterranean regions. The ship's home port, loading sequence, intended destination and exact route remain debated.

Historical interpretation

InterpretiveThe cargo clearly reflects high-value, long-distance exchange, but interpretations as a royal shipment, diplomatic gift cargo or privately organized merchant venture go beyond direct archaeological observation.

Visual reconstruction

ProbableHull remains support reconstruction as a cedar-built vessel using pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery, but only a small portion of the hull survived and the complete appearance is reconstructed.
