Thule Inuit at Qilakitsoq

Reconstruction

At Qilakitsoq, on Greenland’s Nuussuaq Peninsula near Uummannaq, eight naturally mummified Inuit were discovered in 1972 and archaeologically recovered in 1978. The two rock-cleft graves contained six adult women and two boys, all fully dressed, together with additional hides and clothing. Cold, dry air passing through the sheltered graves effectively freeze-dried bodies, garments, hair, and internal tissues. This exceptional preservation allows unusually direct study of fifteenth-century Thule Inuit lives, although it cannot by itself reveal why the individuals died.

Radiocarbon measurements place sampled remains between approximately 1460 and 1510 CE, with a mean near 1470; the frequently quoted date 1475 is therefore a useful midpoint, not a documented year of death. Archaeological interpretations have proposed that the people died at roughly the same time, but earlier examinations also acknowledged that the graves may have received burials at intervals. Mitochondrial DNA established several maternal connections while overturning parts of an older, more elaborate family-tree reconstruction. The group clearly included related individuals, but not every relationship can be specified.

Food evidence comes from two particularly valuable analyses. Carbon-isotope measurements from the four-year-old boy suggest that about 75 percent of his dietary protein or dietary contribution was marine, with the remainder terrestrial. That result applies directly to one child and cannot identify particular species. Microscopic examination of intestinal material from one woman revealed animal hairs and feathers alongside crowberry, grasses, mosses, fungi, pollen, and other plant remains. Separate botanical analysis judged Arctic sorrel to have been eaten, although some pollen and plant matter represented contamination or may have entered food indirectly. These findings demonstrate that a heavily animal-based diet could include gathered plants, but they do not constitute a complete menu.

Preparation is less securely known. Surveyors recorded dwelling remains and meat caches at Qilakitsoq, indicating the importance of storing seasonal provisions, yet the structures were not excavated and their contemporaneity with the graves is unproven. Marine meat and fat may have been eaten fresh, frozen, dried, boiled, or otherwise stored, as documented in wider Inuit foodways, but the Qilakitsoq evidence does not distinguish among these methods. Likewise, preserved seal and caribou skins document sophisticated use of hunted animals without proving that every represented species was eaten by these individuals.

Qilakitsoq matters because human tissue, intestinal remains, clothing, isotopes, and DNA can be studied together rather than in isolation. The evidence supports a flexible food economy centered on Arctic animals and supplemented by plants, embedded in seasonal movement, storage, skilled clothing production, and kinship. Such practices have broad continuities in Greenlandic food culture, but the graves cannot establish an uninterrupted lineage for any single modern dish.

Historical context

Thule Inuit communities had spread around much of Greenland after ancestors entered the island from the northwest around the thirteenth century. Kayaks, larger skin boats, dog traction, tailored skin clothing, marine hunting, and seasonal food storage supported movement through coastal environments. Far to the south, Greenland’s Norse settlements were disappearing during the fifteenth century amid interacting environmental, economic, and demographic pressures. Qilakitsoq belonged to a different, northern food world organized primarily around locally available marine and terrestrial resources rather than farming or regular European supply.

Archaeological

StrongEight naturally preserved individuals, two graves, complete garments, additional hides, and associated burial materials were directly documented. Site surveys also recorded dwellings, graves, and meat caches, although the structures were not excavated.

Residue chemical

ModerateCarbon-isotope analysis directly supports a predominantly marine dietary contribution for one four-year-old boy. It does not identify species or establish an identical diet for all eight individuals.

Food identification

ModerateMicroscopy identified several plant taxa, animal hairs, and feathers in intestinal material from one woman. Arctic sorrel was probably consumed, while some pollen and plant remains were contamination or have uncertain pathways into the digestive tract.

Dating

StrongMultiple radiocarbon samples securely place the burial assemblage in the late fifteenth century, approximately 1460–1510 CE. The conventional date 1475 is a midpoint reconstruction rather than an exact event date.

Preparation method

LimitedMeat caches support seasonal storage at the broader site, but no excavated preparation area or direct evidence distinguishes freezing, drying, boiling, fermentation, or raw consumption for the foods eaten by the buried individuals.

Geographic attribution

StrongThe graves and settlement are securely attributed to Qilakitsoq on the northern Nuussuaq Peninsula near Uummannaq. The coordinates supplied in the original card do not match the mapped archaeological site.

Historical interpretation

InterpretiveSimultaneous death, season of burial, cause of death, and a complete family structure remain debated or incompletely resolved. Genetic evidence revised several relationships proposed by earlier studies.

Visual reconstruction

StrongFully preserved garments and 25 additional clothing articles provide direct evidence for fifteenth-century clothing construction and layering rather than requiring reconstruction from fragments alone.
