Yamnaya Dairying and Steppe Expansion

Reconstruction

Between about 3300 and 2500 BCE, communities associated with the Yamnaya archaeological horizon expanded across the Pontic–Caspian steppe and beyond. Ancient DNA documents population movements westward into Europe, while closely related Afanasievo groups appeared thousands of kilometres to the east. Archaeologists had long proposed that livestock, wagons and dairy foods helped make this mobility possible. Proteomic analysis of mineralized dental plaque has now supplied direct evidence that dairy products were consumed by individuals from the western Eurasian steppe during this transformation.

Researchers identify milk consumption through proteins trapped in dental calculus, especially beta-lactoglobulin and caseins. These proteins demonstrate that an individual ate dairy, although they usually cannot establish whether it was consumed as fresh milk, curds, cheese or a fermented drink. Regional results also reveal variation through time. Research in the North Caucasus found an early emphasis on sheep milk among Maykop and early Yamnaya individuals. By the late Yamnaya period, evidence from one tested individual indicated a broader dairy economy involving sheep, goats and cattle. These patterns should not be generalized to every Yamnaya community from the small number of sampled people.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

Dairy consumption did not require widespread adult lactase persistence. Ancient genetic studies indicate that the principal European lactase-persistence allele remained uncommon in Bronze Age steppe and European populations. Lactase-non-persistent people can consume limited quantities of milk, and processing can reduce lactose. Fermentation, curdling and separation of whey are therefore reasonable possibilities, especially because such techniques were already known elsewhere in prehistoric Eurasia. No Yamnaya recipe or processing installation, however, directly identifies which products they made, so specific reconstructions such as yogurt or cheese remain hypotheses.

Dairying mattered because grazing animals converted steppe vegetation unsuitable for humans into recurring supplies of food and fluid. Milking could provide nourishment without slaughtering breeding animals, while herds also supplied meat, hides, wool and traction. Together with ox-drawn wagons and seasonal movement between pastures, dairy herding plausibly supported life away from permanent riverine settlements. The chronological overlap between intensified dairying and Yamnaya expansion is strong; the claim that milk caused the expansion is a scholarly interpretation rather than something dental calculus can prove.

A 2021 study also reported possible horse-milk proteins in two Early Bronze Age individuals, but later work noted problematic dating and little regional replication. Horse milking should therefore not be treated as a universal Yamnaya practice. The broader legacy is clearer: mobile dairy pastoralism spread eastward with Afanasievo-associated communities and remained important across Eurasian grasslands. Modern fermented milks, cheeses and steppe pastoral economies illustrate the durability of dairying, although no named modern product can be traced directly to a documented Yamnaya recipe.

Historical context

The Pontic–Caspian grasslands formed the western end of a steppe corridor extending roughly 6,000 kilometres toward Mongolia. Yamnaya communities used burial mounds and occupied landscapes where permanent settlements became comparatively scarce. Solid-wheeled wagons, probably drawn by cattle rather than horses, permitted movement of households and supplies. West of the steppe, farming societies associated with the Corded Ware phenomenon emerged from about 2900 BCE; eastward, closely related Afanasievo pastoralists reached the Altai and Mongolia. Writing existed in Mesopotamia and Egypt, but Yamnaya food practices are reconstructed entirely from archaeology, human remains and biomolecular evidence.

Archaeological

StrongKurgan cemeteries, livestock remains and vehicles or vehicle representations establish the mortuary and pastoral context of Yamnaya-era mobility, although they do not independently prove dairy consumption.

Zooarchaeological

ModerateDomestic sheep, goats and cattle are documented in regional pastoral economies. Herd composition and mortality evidence support livestock exploitation but vary among sites and do not by themselves identify milk products.

Residue chemical

StrongTandem mass spectrometry identified milk-specific proteins preserved in human dental calculus, providing direct evidence that sampled individuals consumed dairy products.

Food identification

StrongMilk proteins securely identify dairy consumption. Some peptides permit assignment to sheep, goat, cattle or horse lineages, but taxonomic resolution differs among samples.

Dating

StrongArchaeological attribution and radiocarbon dating place the central Yamnaya horizon approximately between 3300 and 2500 BCE, with individual sample dates carrying their own calibrated ranges.

Preparation method

LimitedDental calculus cannot determine whether dairy was fresh, fermented, curdled, dried or made into cheese. Lactose-reducing processing is a reasonable reconstruction, not a direct observation.

Geographic attribution

ModerateThe evidence concerns multiple sites across the western Eurasian steppe and adjacent regions. The Samara Valley is relevant but cannot represent the entire distribution by itself.

Historical interpretation

ProbableDairying plausibly supported mobile pastoralism by supplying renewable food and fluid, but chronological association does not demonstrate that it was the sole or decisive cause of Yamnaya expansion.
