Yanghai’s Cannabis and Grapes

Reconstruction

At Yanghai, near the foot of Xinjiang’s Flaming Mountains, deep graves, alkaline soils and an extremely dry climate preserved plant material that would normally have vanished. The cemetery belonged to communities living in the Turpan Basin during the late Bronze and Iron Ages. Its baskets, bowls, clothing, riding equipment and botanical remains do not represent an ordinary meal or settlement rubbish: most were deliberately placed with the dead. They nevertheless offer unusually concrete evidence for the plants that local people cultivated, processed and valued.

The best-known find came from tomb M90, where a leather basket and wooden bowl contained about 789 grams of cannabis shoots, leaves and fruits. Botanical anatomy and ancient DNA identified Cannabis sativa. Chemical analysis detected cannabinoid compounds and genetic capacity for producing tetrahydrocannabinolic acid. The material included glandular plant parts and lacked the stalk-dominated composition expected from a fiber crop. Researchers therefore consider medicinal, psychoactive or divinatory use probable. The bowl’s worn interior may indicate pounding, but no pipe, brazier or other device established how the cannabis was administered. It may have been inhaled, fumigated or consumed orally; none of these methods is directly demonstrated at Yanghai. Nor is there good evidence that this cache was intended as ordinary food or oilseed.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

The grape evidence came from a different grave and a later period. A woody stem in tomb M2069 was identified anatomically as Vitis vinifera and directly radiocarbon-dated to roughly 2,300 years ago. Because vine wood represents the parent plant rather than an easily transported raisin or seed, it provides strong evidence that grapevines were growing locally by about the fourth or third century BCE. It does not, by itself, reveal the cultivar, irrigation system or product. Fresh grapes, raisins and wine are all plausible uses of cultivated vines, but none was identified directly from this specimen.

Other Yanghai discoveries place these exceptional plants within a broader food economy. Wheat, naked barley and millet were present, and desiccated cooked dough made from wheat and barley was dense and unfermented, resembling flatbread. Nearby Subeixi graves preserved millet noodles and cakes. Together, these foods show eastern and western cereal traditions meeting in an agropastoral oasis where herding, farming and long-distance exchange overlapped.

Modern Turpan remains closely associated with grapes and raisins, making the ancient vine an important early chapter in the region’s horticultural history. Direct continuity of cultivars or drying methods cannot be demonstrated. Yanghai’s greater significance is evidential: it shows that, before the historically organized Silk Roads, oasis communities were already transforming imported crops and pharmacologically active plants into locally meaningful foods, medicines and funerary offerings.

Historical context

The Turpan Basin was a hyper-arid oasis environment between the Tian Shan and the eastern Tarim Basin. Rainfall at Yanghai is exceptionally low, while mountain water made pockets of cultivation and pasture possible. Farther east, the Eastern Zhou period in China lasted from 770 to 256 BCE; farther west, the Achaemenid Empire dominated much of Central and Western Asia from about 550 to 330 BCE. Wheat, barley and grapevine had moved east from western Eurasia, while broomcorn millet moved west from northern China. These exchanges preceded the diplomatic journeys of Zhang Qian in 138 and 119 BCE and the later, historically documented Silk Road networks.

Evidence

Archaeological

StrongCannabis was recovered in a leather basket and wooden bowl in tomb M90, while the grapevine stem came from tomb M2069. The burial contexts and associated objects were recorded archaeologically.

Archaeobotanical

StrongCannabis shoots, leaves, fruits and glandular tissues were identified morphologically and anatomically. The grape specimen was identified from diagnostic stem anatomy as Vitis vinifera.

Residue chemical

StrongPhytochemical analysis of the cannabis detected cannabinoids and degradation products, while genetic analysis identified Cannabis sativa and sequences associated with cannabinoid synthesis. These analyses demonstrate pharmacologically relevant potential but do not establish the administered dose or method.

Food identification

StrongThe grapevine and cannabis identifications are supported by multiple botanical methods. Separate Yanghai dough remains were identified as cooked wheat-and-barley foods through spectroscopy and plant microfossils.

Dating

ModerateThe grapevine stem has a direct AMS radiocarbon measurement of 2245 ± 35 radiocarbon years BP. The cannabis burial is generally placed around 700 BCE using radiocarbon evidence and archaeological correlations, but published descriptions have alternated between approximately 2,500 and 2,700 years old.

Preparation method

LimitedWear inside the cannabis bowl is consistent with pounding, and the plant material may have been lightly processed. No smoking implement or other delivery apparatus was found, and no grape-processing method was demonstrated.

Geographic attribution

StrongThe published location of Yanghai Cemetery is near 42.81° N, 89.65° E in Shanshan County, Turpan, Xinjiang. Tomb M90 has a reported GPS position within this area.

Historical interpretation

ProbableMedicinal, psychoactive or divinatory use of the cannabis is a scholarly inference based on plant composition, grave context and associated objects. Calling the deceased a shaman is interpretive rather than a directly observable identity.

Visual reconstruction

LimitedThe containers and preserved plants can be depicted from documented finds, but any scene showing cannabis consumption, grape harvesting, wine production or a funerary ceremony would require substantial reconstruction.
