Reconstruction
Cellophane entered food packaging not as a single finished invention but through a sequence of advances between the 1900s and the late 1920s. Swiss chemist and textile engineer Jacques Edwin Brandenberger developed machinery in France for casting transparent film from viscose, a chemically processed form of cellulose. By 1909 his workshop at Thaon-les-Vosges could produce continuous, thin sheets, and in 1912 the name Cellophane was registered. Although later accounts often attribute his idea to seeing wine spilled on a restaurant tablecloth, that origin story is less securely documented than the patents and industrial records.
Manufacture transformed purified wood pulp into cellulose xanthate using sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide. The resulting viscose solution was filtered and cast through a narrow opening into coagulating and acidic baths, regenerating the cellulose as a continuous film. Washing removed chemical residues, while glycerol helped keep the dried sheet flexible. La Cellophane was incorporated in Paris in 1913, and production began at Bezons during the First World War, when film was used notably for gas-mask eyepieces. Food wrapping became commercially more important after the war.
Transparency was cellophane’s immediate advantage. Paper, cartons, metal foil, and waxed paper could conceal food, whereas clear film let shoppers inspect chocolates, confectionery, and other goods without opening the package. Whitman’s used imported French cellophane with its boxed chocolates in the United States from 1912. Enclosing food also reduced direct handling and exposure to dust and insects, although wrapping alone did not sterilize food or guarantee safety.
Early cellophane had a serious limitation: it resisted liquid water but allowed water vapor to pass through. Consequently, it could not reliably prevent bread from drying or moisture-sensitive foods from deteriorating. After DuPont acquired American production rights in 1923, chemists William Hale Charch and Karl Edwin Prindle developed a transparent moisture-resistant coating. Their patent application was filed in 1927, and commercial listings followed by 1928. This coated film—not the original uncoated product—made cellophane broadly effective for bakery goods, candy, cheese, and similar foods.
Cellophane helped turn the package into both protection and salesperson. Its visibility suited emerging self-service groceries, where shoppers increasingly selected goods without a clerk. Later formulations supported packaged bread and fresh-meat displays, although meat required carefully balanced oxygen and moisture transmission. Petroleum-derived films increasingly displaced cellulose film after the mid-twentieth century, but modern transparent wrappers retain cellophane’s central commercial idea: food should remain enclosed, transportable, branded, and visible before purchase.

Europe moved from prewar industrial expansion through the First World War of 1914–1918 and into a new era of mass consumer goods. Cellophane production at Bezons was initially redirected toward gas-mask eyepieces, illustrating how wartime demand could reshape a civilian invention. Across the Atlantic, the first widely recognized self-service grocery, Piggly Wiggly, opened in Memphis in 1916, and DuPont began producing cellophane in Buffalo in 1924. Paper, glass, metal cans, wooden containers, and waxed or greaseproof papers still dominated food packaging, but branded factory-packed foods were becoming increasingly important in long-distance distribution.
