Reconstruction
By the late 1880s, California grain growers were turning a difficult sequence of harvest jobs into one continuous operation. A combine cut standing grain, carried the heads into a threshing cylinder, separated kernels from straw and chaff, cleaned them, and delivered the grain into sacks. The machine represented here is the link-belt combined harvester built by Benjamin Holt in Stockton in 1886 and first used in the field in 1887. It was an important commercial refinement, not the invention of the combine itself: Hiram Moore had operated a combined harvester in Michigan in the 1830s, while practical Shippee, Houser, and other machines were working around Stockton before Holt's model.
California offered unusually favorable conditions for these enormous machines. Wheat farms were large, harvest labor was costly and sometimes difficult to secure, the Central Valley was comparatively level, and its rainless summer harvest season allowed ripe grain to be cut and threshed without the moisture problems common farther east. Large ranches could also spread the price of specialized machinery and substantial animal teams across thousands of acres. The farms therefore encouraged combine adoption as much as combines encouraged further consolidation and expansion.
The preserved 1886 Holt machine replaced vulnerable gear trains with flexible link belts. Its ground wheel transmitted motion through those belts to the cutter, reel, conveyor, threshing mechanism, cleaning sieve, and grain elevator. If a team bolted or the mechanism jammed, a belt could fail without stripping expensive gears and was generally easier to repair. Teams of at least twenty horses or mules pulled some Holt machines. Smithsonian records state that on this example's first documented working day, June 1, 1887, its driver received $2.50 for the day.
Combining eliminated the need to haul headed grain to a separate stationary threshing crew. Contemporary reports describe machines operated by only a few workers putting cleaned wheat directly into sacks, although they still required skilled handling, many draft animals, and support labor. Adoption accelerated rapidly: scholarly estimates place 500 to 600 combines in California by 1888. The Houser was initially the most popular Stockton model; Holt machines became dominant later, illustrating that the transformation resulted from competition and cumulative improvement rather than one isolated invention.
The combine reorganized the route from field to food. Quicker harvesting and immediate cleaning and sacking supported California's large export-oriented wheat economy and reduced dependence on separate harvest crews. Horse teams were later replaced by steam and internal-combustion power, followed by self-propelled machines. Modern combines are vastly smaller in crew requirements and more controllable, but they retain the defining sequence visible in Stockton: cutting, conveying, threshing, separating, cleaning, and collecting grain during a single passage through the field.
Historical context
California was growing from about 865,000 residents in 1880 to roughly 1.21 million in 1890; Stockton itself had 13,629 inhabitants in the 1890 census. Wheat and barley occupied more than three-quarters of California's harvested cropland in 1879, and much of the grain entered long-distance markets through San Francisco Bay. Dry summers, broad Central Valley fields, large farms, high labor costs, rail connections, and an established machinery industry made Stockton an unusually productive center of agricultural experimentation. By 1888, an estimated 500 to 600 combines were already operating in California.

The title can imply that the combine originated in Stockton during 1886-1890. Hiram Moore operated and patented a combined harvester in the 1830s, and commercially promoted Shippee combines were harvesting California grain by 1884. The date range is defensible for the documented Holt link-belt machine and rapid California diffusion, not for invention of the combine.
