Reconstruction
Between the Qin conquest of Shu and the end of the Han dynasty, salt making in the Sichuan Basin became an increasingly organized combination of extraction, evaporation, transport, and government control. The basin held underground brines far from the sea, making wells economically valuable. A later regional history credits the Qin official Li Bing with opening salt wells at Guangdu, near Chengdu, in the third century BCE. Because that account was written centuries afterward, it supports an early tradition rather than providing contemporary eyewitness evidence.
The clearest visual evidence comes from Eastern Han tomb bricks found around Qionglai. Their stamped scenes show workers operating a framed hoist over a broad shaft well, collecting brine, conveying it toward a roofed hearth, and boiling it in pans. One scholarly reconstruction estimates the depicted shaft at roughly eight to ten metres deep, although dimensions inferred from artwork remain approximate. Workers probably dug such wells manually near brine-bearing riverbeds and stabilized their mouths with masonry. Brine was raised in containers by rope and pulley, then heated until water evaporated and crystalline salt remained. Wood and other plant fuels were the normal heat sources.
The resulting salt entered food chiefly as a seasoning and preservative. It could make vegetables, meat, fish, and fermented bean products last longer, but surviving well scenes do not reveal which particular foods local households prepared. Salt's universal demand nevertheless connected extraction sites with merchants, farming communities, towns, and imperial administrators. Early Western Han authorities taxed private producers; around 119 BCE, Emperor Wu's government imposed much stronger state control over salt and iron production and distribution. The policy helped finance imperial government and warfare but provoked the famous court debate recorded in the Discourses on Salt and Iron in 81 BCE.
Two elements of the supplied story belong more securely to later periods. Han evidence depicts shaft wells, not the narrow, percussion-drilled boreholes that transformed Sichuan production after the mid-eleventh century. The first surviving record of natural gas being used to boil Sichuan brine dates to the third century CE, while systematic gas-fired production is documented much later. Likewise, Zigong became an exceptionally prolific salt centre principally in the early modern and modern periods, although salt making existed in southern Sichuan earlier.
The Qin and Han installations should therefore be understood as foundations of Sichuan's long industrial history rather than as the fully developed deep-drilling system. They established specialized labor, lifting structures, evaporation workshops, commercial circulation, and administrative control. Later producers refined those foundations into narrow boreholes, bamboo piping, gas-fired pans, towering derricks, and wells exceeding one kilometre. Modern Sichuan well salt belongs to that extended technological sequence, but direct continuity in every tool or workshop cannot be assumed.
Historical context
Sichuan was being incorporated into expanding imperial states. Qin conquered the kingdoms of Shu and Ba in 316 BCE, established commanderies, and relocated settlers into the basin; China was unified under Qin in 221 BCE and then governed for most of this card's span by the Han. The Han census of 2 CE registered nearly 60 million people, while Chengdu may have had more than 300,000 registered residents by the early first century CE. Salt, iron, roads, river transport, taxation, and coerced labor tied the fertile but mountain-ringed basin to an empire stretching from the Korean frontier toward Central Asia and northern Vietnam.

ModerateSalt-production landscapes and equipment are documented in Sichuan, but long-lived extraction sites are difficult to assign securely to a single phase, and the evidence does not establish a Qin-Han deep-borehole complex at Zigong.
Written sources
ModerateHan fiscal institutions and the salt monopoly are supported by transmitted histories, excavated administrative texts, and the Discourses on Salt and Iron. The Li Bing well-opening account is preserved in the fourth-century CE Huayang guozhi and is therefore later testimony.

StrongBoiling brine in pans over hearths is directly depicted. Reconstruction of exact pan materials, temperatures, fuel consumption, and crystal-finishing procedures remains limited.
Geographic attribution
LimitedEarly well salt is well supported for the wider Sichuan Basin, especially Guangdu and Qionglai. The supplied coordinates identify Zigong, whose prominence is much better documented for later periods.
Historical interpretation
ModerateDescribing Qin-Han well salt as an early industrial food system is defensible because it required specialized installations, labor, distribution, and administration. Treating it as the mature deep-drilled, gas-fired Zigong system would be anachronistic.

InterpretiveHan reliefs support a broad reconstruction of the workflow, but estimates of well depth, building form, pipelines, worker numbers, and spatial arrangement depend partly on interpreting stylized funerary images.
