The First Retail Barcode Scan

On 26 June 1974, a small package crossed a supermarket checkout in Troy, Ohio, and became a landmark in food distribution. Cashier Sharon Buchanan passed a 10-pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit chewing gum over a scanner at a Marsh supermarket. The customer was Clyde Dawson, Marsh’s research and development director, and the gum cost 67 cents. This was the first live retail checkout scan of a product carrying the standardized Universal Product Code, or UPC—not the first barcode concept or experimental machine-readable grocery system.

The event followed years of cooperation and competition among grocery businesses, manufacturers, consultants, and technology companies. Supermarkets handled thousands of differently priced products, while employees manually marked packages and entered prices at registers. In 1970, an industry committee organized with help from McKinsey & Company sought a common product-identification system. IBM engineer George Laurer led the development of the linear symbol selected as the UPC standard in 1973. Standardization was essential: manufacturers had to print mutually compatible symbols, and retailers needed confidence that costly scanners could read products from many suppliers.

At Marsh, the Spectra Physics Model A scanner contained a helium-neon laser. A rotating mirror directed its beam through a glass checkout plate; light reflected from the printed bars was detected electronically. The signal identified a numerical product code, which the computerized NCR register matched to a stored description and price. The code itself did not inherently contain the retail price. That separation allowed stores to alter database prices without relabeling every can, cereal box, frozen dinner, or gum package.

The famous gum mattered less as food than as proof that even a small consumer package could participate in a shared information system. Scanning linked checkout activity to sales records and inventory decisions, making packaged foods especially suitable for automated management. Adoption was neither immediate nor costless: stores had to purchase equipment, manufacturers had to redesign packaging, and consumers and labor organizations questioned accuracy and employment effects. Later economic research using early supermarket data estimated that scanners raised store labor productivity by about 4.5 percent in their first years, with larger effects where packaged goods supplied more revenue.

The lasting change was the creation of a dependable digital identity for each standardized retail product. Barcode data supported faster price lookup, replenishment, demand analysis, distribution, and eventually more extensive supply-chain tracking. Modern two-dimensional codes can carry or connect to information about batches, expiration, ingredients, and recalls, but they inherit the central principle demonstrated in Troy: a physical food package can be connected instantly and consistently to a computerized record.

The world population had reached approximately 4 billion, while the U.S. population was about 212 million in June 1974, including armed forces overseas. American supermarkets were expanding their selections of branded, canned, frozen, and other packaged foods while confronting high labor costs and limited real-time knowledge of inventory. The first UPC scan occurred only fourteen months after the grocery industry selected the standard in April 1973. It also came amid recession, the aftermath of the 1973 oil embargo, and unusually severe food-price inflation, circumstances that intensified commercial interest in efficiency and inventory control.
