Reconstruction
Between 1910 and 1940, the internal-combustion tractor changed American farming from a system powered chiefly by living animals into one increasingly driven by purchased fuel. The transition was gradual rather than a single replacement event. United States agricultural statistics record approximately 24.2 million horses and mules and only about 1,000 tractors on farms in 1910. By 1940, tractors numbered about 1.55 million, while horses and mules still totaled roughly 14.5 million. Many farms therefore operated mixed power systems for decades.
Early gasoline tractors were heavy machines best suited to plowing, harrowing, stationary belt work, and large farms. Their engines converted fuel combustion into rotary power transmitted to the wheels, a drawbar, or a belt pulley that could operate threshers and other equipment. Improvements between 1910 and 1940 made tractors smaller, cheaper, and more versatile. The mass-produced Fordson appeared in 1917, while the McCormick-Deering Farmall of 1924 helped establish the general-purpose row-crop tractor. Power takeoffs, pneumatic tires, and improved implement controls further expanded the work tractors could perform.
Waterloo, Iowa, is an appropriate landmark for this transition, although mechanization occurred nationally. Deere & Company purchased the Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company in 1918 and continued developing its Waterloo Boy tractor line. The first machine tested by the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory in 1920 was a Waterloo Boy Model N. Nebraska's testing system responded to unreliable machines and exaggerated advertising by publishing standardized measurements of drawbar power, belt power, and fuel consumption.
The food-system consequences extended beyond faster plowing. Horses and mules consumed oats, maize, hay, and pasture that could otherwise support food animals or market crops. Economic historians estimate that a mature farm horse commonly required the output of about three acres of cropland annually. As draft-animal numbers declined, land and feed could be redirected toward pork, beef, dairy production, and crops intended for human consumption. Tractors also enabled farmers to complete time-sensitive operations with fewer workers and encouraged larger fields, specialized production, and heavier equipment. Mechanization alone did not explain later yield gains, which also depended on improved seed, fertilizer, pest control, and other innovations.
The exchange carried new risks. Farmers no longer raised all their own motive power; they purchased tractors, petroleum, parts, and repairs from industrial suppliers. Capital costs favored farms able to finance machinery, while reduced labor requirements contributed to long-term rural restructuring. Modern diesel tractors, combines, and mechanized supply chains descend from this transformation, as does agriculture's enduring dependence on fossil energy.
Historical context
The United States was becoming predominantly urban and industrial. Its population rose from about 92 million in 1910 to about 132 million in 1940, while the rural share fell from approximately 54.5 percent to 43.5 percent. Tractor adoption accelerated after the First World War but was interrupted unevenly by the agricultural depression of the 1920s, the Great Depression, and the Dust Bowl. Railroads already connected Midwestern grain and livestock regions to distant cities and ports, while automobiles, trucks, rural electrification, hybrid maize, and improved harvesting machinery were beginning to reorganize production and distribution.
