On October 26, 1852, the United States granted Francis Wolle Patent No. 9,355 for a “Machine for Making Bags of Paper.” The patent identifies Wolle as a resident of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania—not Springfield, Massachusetts—and protects machinery rather than the paper bag as an object. Paper had already served as wrapping material, but Wolle proposed coordinating the operations needed to turn a roll of paper into completed bags with much less manual handling.
