The Steel Plow Breaks Prairie Soil

Reconstruction

In 1837, blacksmith John Deere produced an improved moldboard plow at Grand Detour, Illinois, intended for the difficult soils encountered by Euro-American prairie farmers. Existing wooden and cast-iron plows could cut soil, but damp earth often adhered to their moldboards. Farmers repeatedly stopped to scrape them clean, while dense prairie roots and sod added further resistance.

Deere’s answer was a durable steel cutting share combined with a smoothly shaped, highly polished moldboard. As the share opened the ground, soil moved upward and turned across the moldboard; its smooth surface left fewer irregularities to which sticky earth could cling. This self-scouring action reduced interruptions and made sustained plowing more practical. It did not eliminate the need for animal power, and breaking intact sod remained demanding work.

The familiar label “steel plow” requires qualification. Metallurgical examination of the earliest surviving Deere example, attributed to 1838, found a steel share but a polished wrought-iron moldboard. That artifact is believed, rather than proven, to resemble Deere’s lost 1837 implement. The oft-repeated story that Deere fashioned the entire moldboard from a discarded saw blade is plausible but not securely documented. Leonard Andrus’s contribution to the initial design is also disputed.

Evidence becomes firmer as production developed. An 1843 newspaper advertisement described Deere plows with steel shares and polished iron moldboards. Deere and Andrus entered a documented partnership that year, allowing manufacture beyond the scale of a single blacksmith shop. Deere moved operations to Moline in 1847, gaining better access to Mississippi River transportation, water power, materials, and expanding agricultural markets.

Self-scouring plows helped farmers cultivate larger areas of prairie, increasing the potential production of wheat, maize, oats, and livestock feed. They worked alongside other forces: federal land sales, settler migration, Indigenous dispossession, horse and ox power, mechanical reapers, drainage, canals, and railroads. Deere was not the only maker experimenting with improved prairie plows, so the transformation should not be credited to one inventor or implement alone.

The food-system consequences were substantial. Mechanized tillage supported the growth of commercial grain farms whose harvests supplied flour mills, livestock operations, cities, and eventually industrial breakfast-food manufacturers. Greater cultivation also replaced biologically diverse prairie with fields and exposed soil to erosion and nutrient loss. These environmental costs became increasingly apparent as mechanized tillage intensified.

Modern moldboard plows descend technologically from these nineteenth-century implements, although many farmers now reduce or avoid full inversion tillage to conserve soil. Deere’s documented achievement was therefore not the invention of plowing itself, but the successful refinement and commercialization of a tool suited to prairie agriculture—one component in creating the Midwestern grain landscape that continues to shape American food.

Historical context

Illinois was undergoing exceptionally rapid settlement: its recorded population rose from 157,445 in 1830 to 476,183 in 1840, roughly tripling in one decade. This expansion followed warfare, coercive treaties, and the forced removal of Native peoples from much of northern Illinois. Chicago became an incorporated city in 1837, while work was beginning on the Illinois and Michigan Canal, completed in 1848, which would connect the Great Lakes with the Illinois-Mississippi river system. Agriculture still relied chiefly on human labor and horses or oxen, but improved plows, mechanical reapers, canals, and later railroads were beginning to link prairie farms to distant urban and export markets.

ModerateThe Grand Detour workshop site has been investigated, and an early Deere plow survives in the Smithsonian collection. The surviving implement is attributed to 1838, however, not directly to the 1837 event.

Historical interpretation

ModerateThe plow's importance to prairie cultivation is well supported, but claims that Deere alone invented the steel or self-scouring plow, or single-handedly transformed prairie agriculture, overstate a broader field of experimentation and economic change.

Visual reconstruction

LimitedReconstructions of the lost 1837 plow depend largely on the attributed 1838 specimen. Smithsonian research found that earlier reconstructions included uncertain or incorrect details, especially in the handles and material composition.
