Reconstruction
The familiar image of a water buffalo pulling a plough through a flooded rice field captures a durable partnership between people, livestock and wetland agriculture. Placing that partnership in the Lower Yangtze between 4000 and 2500 BCE, however, is a reasonable reconstruction only in its rice-farming half. Archaeology securely documents increasingly intensive rice cultivation there, but it has not securely demonstrated that domestic water buffalo supplied traction, milk or meat in these Neolithic fields.
What is firmly established is a transformation of the Lower Yangtze landscape. Preserved fields at Chuodun and Caoxieshan indicate intensive wet-rice agriculture around 4200–3800 BCE. Over succeeding centuries, communities constructed ditches, embankments and managed plots in a low-lying environment crossed by lakes and waterways. Rice domestication was gradual rather than a single event: evidence from spikelet bases, grains and phytoliths shows cultivated rice acquiring domesticated characteristics over millennia. By the Liangzhu period, beginning around 3300 BCE, rice supported large settlements, specialized labor and marked social hierarchy. The hydraulic works surrounding Liangzhu City reveal coordinated control of water on an exceptional scale.
Food was broader than rice alone. Lower Yangtze communities continued to gather wetland plants such as water caltrop and foxnut, catch freshwater fish, hunt wild mammals and manage pigs. Buffalo bones also occur at Chinese Neolithic sites, which once encouraged claims that local people had domesticated buffalo. Yet identifying a bone as Bubalus does not establish captivity, traction or dairying. Ancient DNA from Neolithic and Bronze Age buffalo remains in northern China identified an extinct indigenous form, Bubalus mephistopheles, without a direct ancestral connection to modern domestic water buffalo, Bubalus bubalis. Zooarchaeological evidence from Zhejiang likewise has not securely established domestic status.
Modern genetics suggests that swamp buffalo ancestry and dispersal were centered farther south or southwest, although the precise place and date of domestication remain debated. A later movement of domestic buffalo into the Yangtze basin is therefore more defensible than a securely documented Lower Yangtze domestication between 4000 and 2500 BCE. No direct residue evidence presently shows buffalo milk processing there, and no harness, pathology or other unequivocal evidence ties Neolithic buffalo to ploughing.
The card’s lasting significance lies in the eventual convergence of two histories: an ancient Lower Yangtze tradition of wet-rice cultivation and the later spread of domestic swamp buffalo. Once combined, buffalo traction helped farmers work saturated soils, while the animals could also supply manure, meat, hides and, in some regions, milk. That integrated system became characteristic of many Asian rice landscapes, but its iconic modern form should not be projected unchanged into the Neolithic Lower Yangtze.
Historical context
The Lower Yangtze was changing from a landscape of dispersed wetland villages into one containing large, socially differentiated centers. Intensive rice fields are documented by about 4200–3800 BCE. Liangzhu culture, approximately 3300–2300 BCE, developed a roughly 300-hectare urban center and an extensive system of dams, levees and channels capable of supporting rice production and thousands of people. Elsewhere, early cities were developing in Mesopotamia, while Indus urbanism emerged later in the third millennium BCE. The Yangtze delta remained an environmentally dynamic zone of wetlands, river channels and changing coastal conditions.
