Cashew-apple juice begins with a botanical oddity. The red, orange, or yellow “apple” is not the tree’s true fruit but a swollen, juicy flower stalk. The true fruit is the kidney-shaped structure attached beneath it, enclosing the cashew kernel in a shell whose oils can burn skin. Juice makers therefore detach the nut before handling the apple as food.

The cashew tree, Anacardium occidentale, is native to tropical South America. Portuguese maritime networks carried it to parts of Africa and Asia during the early modern period, initially valuing the tree in some places for erosion control as well as food. Cashews were consequently present in Africa before 1800, but the supplied date does not securely establish when cashew-apple juice emerged as a named beverage. Nor is there firm evidence that it originated specifically in Benin. Commercial processors may reduce astringency and heat-treat or package the drink, though heating and storage can diminish its unusually high vitamin C content.

The beverage acquired greater economic relevance as African cashew-nut cultivation expanded, particularly in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Export systems usually reward the nut, while the much heavier apples remain near orchards and are often discarded. Turning them into juice can reduce losses and diversify growers’ income, but safe shell separation, clean water, hygienic processing, containers, and cold storage remain constraints. Contemporary cashew-apple juice thus reflects both an older pattern—using fragile fruit at the place of harvest—and a modern effort to capture more value from a globally traded crop.

Historical context

The Atlantic coast of West Africa was connected to long-distance trade in textiles, metals, alcohol, agricultural goods, and enslaved people. The Kingdom of Dahomey was a major regional power inland from the coast, while the modern borders and state of Benin did not yet exist. Cashew trees had already crossed the Atlantic from tropical South America through Portuguese networks, but large export-oriented African cashew industries were mainly a much later development. Local fruit processing still depended on rapid consumption, fermentation, drying, or other techniques that did not require mechanical refrigeration.
