Historical context
Sri Lanka stood within a busy Indian Ocean commercial system linking South Asia with Southeast Asia, the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, and East Africa. The Kingdom of Kotte dominated much of the southwest, while cinnamon and other commodities attracted overseas merchants. Portuguese ships reached the island at the opening of the sixteenth century. Coconut palms were already established in the region, but surviving evidence does not show that the specifically named king coconut drink originated in this moment.
