Historical context
The Mughal Empire governed much of northern India, and Delhi belonged to a densely connected world of imperial roads, gardens, markets, and overland trade. Portuguese shipping linked ports around the Indian Ocean with Africa, Europe, and the Americas, accelerating the movement of crops between tropical regions. Mango was already an established South Asian fruit, while its transplantation overseas proceeded unevenly over subsequent centuries.
