Traditional full-sugar squash remains nutritionally closer to a soft drink than to whole fruit: dilution lowers its energy density, but it supplies little fiber and can still deliver considerable free sugar. Its enduring significance lies in the industrial conversion of perishable citrus into a portable, shelf-stable, portioned drink whose flavor could be reproduced far from an orchard.
