Rosehip drink is the thinner, drinkable relation of Swedish nyponsoppa, literally “rosehip soup.” Its defining ingredient is the fruit of roses, especially hips from hardy wild or cultivated species suited to northern climates. Even so, rosehip products became associated in modern Scandinavia with nourishment, convalescence, children’s meals, and portable outdoor refreshment.
Today nyponsoppa survives in several forms: homemade from gathered hips, mixed from powder, or purchased ready to serve. The thinner drink preserves the central technique—extracting usable fruit pulp while excluding seeds and hairs—but modern packages, refined sugar, starches, and controlled processing have changed its labor, consistency, and availability. Its significance lies less in a provable invention around 1800 than in the durable Swedish conversion of a difficult local fruit into a familiar year-round food.
