Sea-buckthorn juice is a vivid orange drink made from the exceptionally acidic fruits of shrubs in the genus Hippophae, most commonly Hippophae rhamnoides in Europe. Sea buckthorn grows naturally across a broad Eurasian range and tolerates cold, wind, salinity, and nutrient-poor sand or gravel. That resilience made its fruit available in coastal districts, river valleys, steppes, and mountain regions where many orchard crops were less dependable. Estonia is an important modern setting for the drink, but neither an Estonian invention nor a precise emergence in 1900 is securely documented.
References to sea buckthorn in older Eurasian medical and botanical traditions show that people knew and used the plant long before industrial juice production. They do not, by themselves, establish an uninterrupted tradition of the modern sweetened beverage. Around the turn of the twentieth century, however, mechanical fruit presses, commercial sugar, glass containers, pasteurization, and later refrigeration created practical conditions for turning intensely seasonal fruits into standardized drinks. Preparation remains straightforward but produces a chemically and texturally unusual juice. Fresh or thawed fruit is crushed, blended, or pressed, after which seeds and coarse skins may be strained away. Because the raw liquid is sharply sour and astringent, it is commonly diluted and sweetened with sugar, honey, syrup, or another fruit juice. Sea-buckthorn pulp contains oil as well as water-soluble juice, so an unhomogenized drink can separate into cloudy and oily layers. Commercial versions may be clarified, homogenized, pasteurized, blended with apple or other milder juices, or sold as concentrated syrup.
The fruit is notable for vitamin C, carotenoid pigments, and oil-bearing pulp and seeds, although composition varies substantially by species, cultivar, ripeness, and processing. Heating, oxygen, and prolonged storage can reduce vitamin C. Straining removes much of the fiber, while generous sweetening raises calories and glycemic load. Claims that the drink treats particular diseases go beyond what its nutrient content alone can establish.
During the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, sea-buckthorn beverages became especially visible in the Baltic region, northern and eastern Europe, Russia, Mongolia, China, and Himalayan areas. Cultivation also expanded because the shrub can stabilize eroding soils and withstand difficult climates, though it may spread aggressively outside suitable management contexts. Today the juice appears as a home-pressed seasonal drink, pasteurized nectar, frozen concentrate, syrup, or wellness product. Its modern identity combines an old Eurasian wild resource with industrial preservation, global health marketing, and the continuing culinary problem of making an extraordinarily sour fruit pleasurable to drink.

Historical context
Estonia formed part of the Russian Empire, and Tallinn was a growing Baltic port of roughly 60,000 inhabitants near the turn of the century. Railways, steamships, industrial glassmaking, and expanding sugar distribution were changing how fruit products could be pressed, sweetened, bottled, and transported. Pasteurization had become an established preservation principle, although household juice making and cold storage remained strongly seasonal.
