Historical context
Nairobi was only beginning its transformation from an 1899 railway depot into the administrative and commercial center of British East Africa. The Uganda Railway connected the Indian Ocean with the Lake Victoria region by 1901, accelerating the movement of people, crops, equipment, and imported foods. Refined sugar circulated through expanding colonial trade, while refrigeration and electric appliances remained uncommon outside well-equipped commercial or elite settings.
