The cleaner base allowed botanical balance to become the principal signature. This distinguished the developing dry style from sweeter forms such as Old Tom gin, although boundaries were neither immediate nor absolute. Branded London houses expanded during the nineteenth century, aided by glass bottles, advertising, railways, and imperial trade. Gin also entered mixed drinks: tonic water, citrus, bitters, vermouth, and soda transformed how it was served at bars, clubs, and homes.
Today, London dry gin can be produced far beyond Britain. Modern regulatory language formalizes a style that developed gradually rather than appearing fully formed in 1830. Contemporary distillers vary the supporting botanicals, but juniper must remain perceptible and post-distillation flavoring is generally prohibited under the relevant category rules. Its survival demonstrates how improved distillation, regulation, branding, and cocktail culture turned an inconsistent urban spirit into an internationally reproducible product. That success should not obscure alcohol’s enduring risks, including dependence, injury, and chronic disease.

Parliament passed the Beerhouse Act in 1830, while Aeneas Coffey patented a continuous still that same year.
