Costa Rican café chorreado is coffee brewed by gravity through a reusable cloth bag suspended from a stand. The apparatus is the chorreador, while the filter itself is commonly called a bolsita, or little bag. Ground coffee goes into the cloth, hot water is poured from above, and the infusion falls directly into a cup or pot. Its name comes from the Spanish verb chorrear, meaning to drip, stream, or trickle. Cloth retains most particles but can admit more oils than many paper filters, producing a cup that may feel fuller while remaining relatively clear. The bag must be rinsed, kept clean, and dried appropriately; residual coffee oils or poor storage can alter flavor.
Café chorreado is traditionally served black or sweetened, and milk may be added according to household preference. The simple stand can be made from wood and decorated, turning an inexpensive tool into a visible object of craft and identity. Its cultural significance nevertheless rests on more than nostalgia. Coffee exports brought Costa Rica substantial revenue and supported state development, but benefits were uneven, and dependence on an export crop exposed growers and laborers to market fluctuations. Coffee landscapes also displaced other land uses.
Today the chorreador survives alongside electric drip machines, espresso equipment, and manual specialty brewers. Restaurants and cultural demonstrations use it as an emblem of Costa Rican hospitality, while home brewers value its low material requirements and direct control over pouring. Contemporary specialty-coffee practice sometimes applies measured doses and controlled temperatures to the old apparatus. That adaptation is defensible continuity rather than an unchanged nineteenth-century recipe: the cloth-and-gravity principle persists, while beans, roasting, sanitation, and brewing precision continue to evolve.
