Horses Are Domesticated on the Steppe

At Botai in northern Kazakhstan, between roughly 3500 and 3000 BCE, people created an unusually large, durable settlement in the forest-steppe and organized much of their subsistence around horses. The animal bones are overwhelmingly equine—reported at more than 99 percent of the identified fauna—so horse meat was not a marginal food. Carcasses were brought into or slaughtered near the settlement, butchered, and consumed. Pottery absorbed fats from equine carcass products, showing that some horse foods were processed in vessels, although the surviving chemistry cannot reveal a recipe, seasoning, or serving practice.

The most remarkable food evidence is a set of pottery lipids interpreted as mare's milk. Researchers used hydrogen-isotope patterns in fatty acids, tested against modern seasonal samples, to distinguish milk from carcass fat. Five sherds produced signatures consistent with mare's milk. This is direct chemical evidence for a dairy substance in pottery, but the identification remains debated: later dental-calculus proteomics found no milk proteins in two Botai individuals, a sample too small to prove absence. We therefore can say that mare's-milk processing is probable, not that every household drank it or that it was fermented into modern kumis.

Botai food production depended on an extraordinarily close human–horse relationship. Proposed corrals, horse dung incorporated into construction material, the transport of whole carcasses, and dental changes interpreted as bit wear have been used to argue that people kept, milked, and sometimes harnessed horses. Critics reply that some dental wear occurs naturally and that mass hunting or herd-driving could explain parts of the assemblage. The safest reconstruction is specialized horse exploitation with plausible husbandry and physical control; full domestication, especially riding, is not a simple observed fact.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

Genomics has fundamentally changed the story. Botai horses did not found the lineage from which almost all modern domestic horses descend. Ancient genomes instead place them close to the ancestry of Przewalski's horses. Modern domestic horses, often called the DOM2 lineage, emerged farther west in the lower Volga–Don region and spread rapidly much later. Large-scale horse-based mobility across Eurasia is now dated to about 2200 BCE, more than a millennium after Botai's beginnings.

This distinction matters for food history. Botai shows that people could build a settled economy around horse flesh—and probably mare's milk—before the horse lineage that later transformed transport, warfare, and interregional exchange became dominant. Sparse archaeobotanical remains suggest plant foods were not a major visible component of the excavated economy, though preservation and sampling prevent claims that plants were absent.

Today, horse meat and fermented mare's milk remain important in parts of Central Eurasia, including Kazakhstan. They offer a defensible comparison, not a demonstrated unbroken tradition from Botai. Botai's lasting significance is therefore not a single, certain “first domestication,” but an early experiment in managing living horses for food, materials, and perhaps limited work—one branch in a longer, multi-stage history.

Historical context

Northern Kazakhstan was in the Eneolithic, or Copper Age, rather than the regional Bronze Age. Botai stood in a forest-steppe environment of grassland interspersed with birch and pine. Unlike the small, mobile camps of many preceding local hunter-gatherers, the type-site was a substantial settlement with well over 100 semi-subterranean houses. Horse-specialized communities extended across more than 1,000 kilometers of the northern Central Asian forest-steppe, while mixed farming and livestock economies already existed in neighboring regions. Wheeled transport was emerging elsewhere in Eurasia, but the genomic expansion associated with widespread horse-based mobility would not begin until around 2200 BCE.

Evidence

Archaeological

ModeratePermanent pit-house settlement, possible enclosures, construction materials containing horse dung, pottery, and carcass-distribution patterns support unusually intensive human interaction with horses. The functions of individual enclosures and deposits remain interpretive.

Zooarchaeological

StrongHorse remains constitute more than 99 percent of the identified faunal assemblage in published syntheses, directly demonstrating extreme dietary and economic specialization. Zooarchaeology alone does not establish whether every animal was domesticated.

Residue chemical

ModerateAbsorbed pottery lipids include equine carcass fats and hydrogen-isotope signatures interpreted as mare's milk. The analytical result supports milk processing, although its interpretation has been challenged and is not equivalent to identifying fermentation or a named beverage.

Food identification

ProbableHorse meat consumption is strongly supported by abundant butchered remains and carcass residues. Mare's milk is probable from lipid analysis, but the exact milk product and its prevalence within the population are unknown.

Dating

StrongRadiocarbon sequences place the principal Eneolithic occupation broadly in the later fourth and early third millennia BCE, consistent with the card's approximate 3500–3000 BCE range.

Preparation method

LimitedPottery residues show that equine products entered ceramic vessels, but they do not identify whether meat was boiled, rendered, stored, or combined with other ingredients. No Botai recipe is preserved.

Geographic attribution

StrongThe Botai type-site is securely located in present-day North Kazakhstan near the Iman-Burluk River.

Historical interpretation

InterpretiveScholars disagree over whether the evidence represents domestication, limited husbandry, herd management, or specialized hunting. Genomics securely excludes Botai horses as the principal ancestors of modern domestic horses but does not by itself determine how Botai people managed them.

Visual reconstruction

InterpretiveReconstructions may defensibly show pit houses, pottery, horse carcass processing, and horses near the settlement. Depicting mounted riders, bridles, organized dairying, fermentation, or fully domesticated herds would require explicit labeling as disputed reconstruction.
