Sweetened condensed milk is concentrated cow’s milk preserved with a large addition of sugar. Henri Nestlé was then developing farine lactée, an infant food made with milk, cereals, and sugar, at Vevey. His business and Anglo-Swiss were competitors, not one company; they merged in 1905. Condensed milk nevertheless became associated with infant feeding because it appeared clean, consistent, and convenient. That use had serious limitations. Sweetened condensed milk was not nutritionally equivalent to human milk, and dilution with unsafe water or feeding through contaminated vessels could expose infants to illness.
Beyond infant feeding, the product spread through military provisioning, shipping, household retail, confectionery, and colonial trade. Cooks valued its predictable sweetness and body in beverages, puddings, candies, and baked goods. It became especially influential where refrigeration was scarce or fresh milk supplies were unreliable. Regional cuisines subsequently incorporated it into coffee and tea, frozen desserts, milk sweets, and fruit preparations.
Modern sweetened condensed milk is still generally made by standardizing milk, applying heat, evaporating water under vacuum, adding or concentrating sugar, controlling lactose crystallization, and canning the product. Processing is now more tightly regulated, but the underlying preservation principle remains recognizably nineteenth-century: combine dehydration, heat treatment, sugar, and an airtight package to transform fragile milk into a durable global ingredient.

Historical context
Railways and steamships were rapidly reducing freight times, while expanding cities needed food that could survive longer journeys from farms. Fresh milk was difficult to transport safely before mechanical refrigeration and modern pasteurization became widespread. Factories increasingly combined vacuum equipment, steam power, standardized metal cans, trademarks, and national distribution networks.
